Hey Gang,
I'm in FNP school at Duke doing a directed research class at the hyperbaric chamber. I'm trying to figure out what role I could possibly play in hyperbarics as an FNP. I suppose I could start my own chamber and practice. Maybe work for a hyperbaric doc and see his patients and recomend treatments. Other than that I am lost for ideas.

Hello, nursestim,
I'll have to say, you would be the first Hyperbaric NP I've met. I know of a couple RTs who are considering careers as an NP and are exclusively employed in hyperbaric medicine now. But, not sure of their long-term goals.
I would be interested in knowing what all would be involved in this area - as an NP.
I wish you good luck in your research and your career.
Nope sorry, you still have not met a hyperbaric NP, I'm an FNP student (second semester of six). Sorry, I didn't mean to miss lead. I'm just trying to figure out what the NP's posible role would be.
Actually, you did not mislead, Tim - I misread. I read your opening sentence as "I'm an FNP at Duke doing......".
That's what I get for multitasking and doing a poor job at that.
Hellooooooooooooooo anybody out there? Need some input here gang.:mortarboard:

Okay Tim - I work in the ER at a hospital in central IL where we have the only hyperbaric chamber mid-state. Ours is used primarily for wound care and carbon monoxide poisoning. I would supose that an FNP could monitor patients in the chamber, suggest treatment options for those with CO poisoning as well as work with our wound care program to treat wounds.
Does that help?
Off topic - traumaRUs - my dh was the first RT to assist in starting that hyperbaric program years back - if it is the same one I'm thinking about. He was written up in JAMA.
Yes that helps. Keep them comming folks.
Siri - how cool.
Nothing??? Really?!? With access to such a wealth of talent, nobody is willing to postulate to help another nurse? Okay :{
Tim, I'm sorry, but your specialty choice is rather narrow. Like I said, I've never met an NP in this specialty track. Not to say I or the other members do not want to assist you. We are just not familiar with this area.
What does the program that you are currently in say about the APN and hyperbaric medicine?

Nursetim,
I keep checking back to see what info you will find. Darn! I am just starting in hyperbarics and I am having a lot of trouble finding very much info. Especially "nurse" related info. I have a feeling though that by the time I could obtain my FNP there would likely be a place for us? It seems to be growing.
If you find any information I would love it if you would share it here.
I am hoping to find my place in the hyperbaric field.
Thank you for asking the question. Maybe in a few years you can answer it.
