RN on Probation Question

Hi, I am an RN on 3 years Probation in CA and will be moving to OH, KY or WV when I have completed probation in about 2.5 years. I was told recently that if you successfully complete probation in one state and move to another state they have you do a probation term again in the new state....Anyone know if that is true? I am especially curious in the above states I am considering moving to. I also heard if you move while on probation, you start over in the new state, any and all input I am very grateful for. Thanks in advance.

Depends on the state but if the state has a monitoring/peer assistance program then I'd just go ahead and get ready to be signed into that. The vast majority of the time states don't honor other states assistance programs. Since you're on probation, assuming you've been disciplined, the next state will want you in their assistance/monitoring/rehab program.

I left Ca to Florida and had to complete another 5 years. But it depends on the state and on your history. I have heard of KY on this site but rarely from Ohio or WV.

Would it be better to move to the state now while on Probation? If I do have to start over as I have 2.5 years left on CA probation......

Seems you would be cutting an extra 2.5 years from your time if you made the move now.

I don't know about the states you mention - The best thing to do would be to contact the individual BONs for those states and ask. You can do so anonymously but the problem with that is that you have nothing to prove what you were told. You might want to talk with a lawyer experienced with professional practice issues. Every state BON is different but if you are looking to move in the next 5 to 10 years I would definitely do your research. Two states I may plan to move too list in their application for licensure: Have you in the last 10 years been treated for a drug, alcohol, or mental health diagnosis that impaired your practice? Happily I can now honestly answer that question with a no.

What a great accomplishment. I'm very happy for you, congratulations :)

If you leave California probation before completion, whatever time left will be "tolled" meaning stopped until you return to California to complete. California does not give you credit for other states programs.

It is standard for all probation contracts.

This was my experience. After successfully completing the PA VRP, I applied to NJ which is where I lived at the time. They demanded that I do their program, which I refused simply because I had just successfully completed one, the financial burden and time away from my important life events was not worth having to prove myself to them. I do believe they have labled me with disciplinary action and cannot work in state of NJ.

I have talked to lawyers from IN, OH, KY, WV and PA.... sounds like applying for a license in Indiana and moving there sooner than later is my best bet.
