RN needs a job

Hello,

I'm a new grad RN and haven't had any luck getting hired. I'm from MA and currently no hospitals are hiring new grads. I desperately need a job because bills are just piling up. I was considering applying for a nursing assistant position for now until I get hired as an RN. I'm willing to take the pay cut at this point. Are there issues around that? Can an RN work as a nursing assistant? :uhoh21:

In reading the forums here, it seems like lots of new grads are having trouble finding work. And most seem to be from MA., NYC or New Jersey.

Have you checked on Craigslist? At least where I live, reputable companies advertise for workers on it. Are you open to other types of nursing, not just hospital

Would you be able to move? It also seems like some areas have a better job market.

THis time of year, with holidays coming up are the worst time to look. Rather than getting a NA job, maybe get a holiday job (if THOSE are even available in this crap economy) and hit it hard again after the New year.

Good luck to you.......It's taking people a while, but people ARE finding work.

Are there any nursing agencies in your location?

Sometimes when you work through them at

various locations, then the hospital/facility people

get acquainted with you and sometimes offer you

a job.

Sparky, I presume you are looking outside the immediate area? Nothing in southern NH, for instance? Or further west in Mass? It's all pretty driveable, especially if you need a job. When we lived in Worcester, I spent a few years commuting down to Hartford every day.

Have you contacted all the mgrs you did your clinicals at? Have you called into HR to see about setting up a job shadow? what about the school you graduated from--have you called them to see about any job placement services? Or gone to your local un employment office? Have you called agencies to inquire about temp work?

It must be your location as here in the Mid West we hire directly out of school.

Hi,

Have you looked into North Shore Medical Center? They had a new grad program- it's worth looking into. Another option is to go to long term care until you can find a job in a hospital. Good Luck!!!

Sparky,

I am in the exact same situation as you. I have been applying for MONTHS to nursing jobs and nothing has happened. I did get offered two positions at Yale New Haven Hospital in CT back in the summer. If I am not hired somewhere in Boston by January I will be calling HR at Yale. I was told by a nursing recruiter recently that this new grad glut will only get worse since the economy is plummeting. I would give yourself a few more months of hard core searching and then consider moving out of state. There are some places that are starting their new grad searches again for the Spring. I would look into those. And do not discriminate....every single hospital, rehab, nursing home. I feel your pain...

Thanks for all the advice. I've meet with nursing recruiters at alot of MA hospitals but they just aren't hiring new grads right now. I didn't graduate from the traditional 4 year BS program and from what I was told, most hospital had already hired new grads over this summer. I'm just a little late I guest. I've started applying to nursing homes, rehab but even they want 1 year acute care experience. HUH???

Keep Hunting I guess...
