RN and EMT recertification

Hello all,

For any of those RN's that also have EMT certs., I am just curious to know if your job as an RN can be considered actively using EMT skills, or if you would still have to be affiliated with a life squad company to be able to recertify.

Doesn't count in NJ. And you can pay out of pocket for ceu's if you want to maintain the emt cert without riding. Although i'm not sure why anyone would do that.

I didn't think that it would. I'm getting my EMT-B course this summer, and I graduate with my BSN next summer so I was just curious. I plan to continue to volunteer once I am an RN, though. Isn't it required to be actively working as an EMT to recertify? Even if you do all of the CEU's?

Nope. It doesn't. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

I've been an EMT since 2006. I rode voli in high school and then worked for a paid transport company while working on my bsn. I no longer ride (politics on the squad forced me out) but I keep my cert. One day I would like to ride again, and I can always work for a paid company if I need more work. Since I have to pay out of pocket for my nursing license, I don't mind paying for Core-13. It's just part of keeping it as a fall back.

So you don't have to work as an EMT to keep up the cert? I feel like I had read that somewhere, but maybe it was just for national registry.

I agree..especially if you have ACLS cert. or are working in a critical care area.

That's really going to depend a lot on your state but generally no EMS CEUs and RN CEUs are not going to cross over.

Not in my state. EMS governed by DHS. RN by BON. 2 different everything.

In my state, EMT's need to take a recertification course, as well as classroom and independent study hours. Which MAY or may not count toward your RN license renewal, but not the other way around.

EMT is DOT in your state, RN under the BON of the state.

You do need to be somewhat affiliated with a company, as when you put all of your hours into the website "report card" they have to be verified and reviewed by the education person in whatever you are affiliated with.

You may want to go to your local fire department that has an ambulance crew, and ask that you be put "on call" so that you have the choice of going on calls, can involve yourself in their association for classroom continuing ed time, and have the education officer be able to verify your continuing education. Most also sponsor the weekend recertification that one needs to renew.

Another thought is to try for a per diem job at your local ER once you get your EMT. Again, may give you access to specific recertification avenues if the facility has an educator.

Best wishes!

Where I live you still need to run with a service and do required refresher courses
