Return to nursing

Hello all,

I am just looking for advice.I am trying to get back into medsurg nursing after a 6 year hiatus. I have kept an active license, but I still am having difficulty gaining employment. Would a nurse refresher course help with employment? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. THANKS

You need to check with you state BON. I don't know the number in Md, but DO know that anyone not actively working in nursing for a period of time may NOT work without taking a refresher course. The Community Colleges here offer refersher courses check in your area. None of our Hospitals offer them.

Today's market is VERY HIGHLY competative. You need to be very diligent and jump on any opening you see. Make yourself more appealing than 150+ other resumes. Only took me 14 months and tons of resumes, abusive interviewers, and being lied to my face to locate a new job. I had NEVER stopped working in my entire career and have very varied experiences.

Hang in there. Good Luck.

Seek out a refresher course that has active hands on training. I took one years ago in Pittsburgh that was 240 hours with clinical and theory. I felt well prepared on returning after this course. Also there are areas that will hire a nurse who has been out for abit such as outpatient dialysis units. Davita hired me after being out 8 years! I didnt have any requirements from boards that I had to take a refresher course either. Some states do some dont. I hated dialysis in the long run but it did give me my foot in the door to move to other things. I'm starting a new job next month in HHC as a clinical manager so it can be done. Good luck and be patient, it will happen.

:pntrghi: welcome back to nursing! :D :pntlft:
