Reserve and Relocation

I asked this question on goarmy.com and have gotten no replies thus far. I was wondering if anyone here had any insight:

I am considering joining the Army Reserve (as a 66H naturally) in the coming weeks/months and my question is this: Once I join, how difficult is it to change units? I plan on relocating from Mississippi to Colorado as soon as my fiance' returns from Iraq (Sept '09).

If anyone has any idea if it can be done, and how it works, I would really appreciate your input!!

Thanks--

Well, if you're starting from zero and plan to move in a year anyway, you might as well just work with the recruiter and unit in CO now.

It will take at least a few months to be accepted and this is after you get your packet and application together which sounds like you haven't yet begun? This can sometimes be a long process. When all is said and done it can easily be almost sept. 09 already!

My two cents.....

Having moved repeatedly while in the reserves, all that is necessary is for your home unit to release you and there be a unit able/willing to accept you. There are "recruiters" who can help you with this; its not terribly difficult. But as the abover person said, your better off just doing the process where you want to go instead of where you are. After all, what unit is going to knowingly sink the money into you if you just going to leave them anyway.

Thanks for your replies Miss Mab and Cursed Irishman. I was thinking along those lines as far as just doing the whole thing in Colorado. Im fully aware that things dont always move fast or efficiently when it comes to the Military, I just feel lucky that Im pretty sure I wont need any waivers (which should move the process along I think).

The thing is, I have alot of loose ends to tie up back home, namely selling my house (which will probably be just short of impossible with the market like it is), all the little things the house needs leading up to being sold (like painting and minor repairs), and dealing with general family/pet issues.

Again, I appreciate both of your input. It is greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi Armynurse2bsoon,

I happen to know a good recruiter out of Denver--with whom I just successfully completed the "application, boarding, commission, papers" Army Reserve 66H8A process.

It took 7-8 months from "beginning the application to meeting my new unit" (which is actually in Vancouver, Wa---not Colorado).

I just finished a MSN in Colorado, then moved to Portland---so, they let me use my Colorado recruiter. (he and his office are very good)
