Requirements for ADN?

Published

HI,

what are the requirements to be entered into an ADN program? I know that you need a high school diploma and that you should finish some important classes in high school to be prepared. I finished my Algebra classes and all my biology classes. I also finished my Geometry classes and im going to take psychology. Im wondering though...do you have to take a test before getting an ADN? or is that just for the BSN, also if I have to take it, is it hard and will I need to review alot of things that I learned?

Check with the school you want to go to.

My ADN program requires the following before you apply:

English Comp 1

Math (I think it's College Algebra, I tested out)

Chem for Health Sciences

A&P I w/Lab

A&P II w/Lab

Other classes that need to be taken, but can be done during the program (although I would definitely try to do them beforehand) are:

Microbiology w/Lab

Any Psych or Social Sciences

Humanities w/writing credit

In addition, before starting the program, we need to complete several continuing ed classes, totalling 97 clock hours (including CPR certification).

Programs vary greatly, so definitely check with the school. If possible, see an advisor, preferably one who works specifically in the scope of the nursing program. Many advisors who don't specialize in the major will most likely be little help.

Good Luck.

Each and every school has different requirements so you'd be better off asking the individual schools that serve your area what the actual pre-requisite requirements are. However, all ADN's must pass the boards just like BSNs to become RN's.

Heh, yeah I know that everyone has to pass the boards but I diddnt know that every school has different requirements...I guess I have to ask then.

This is tough question to answer. It depends what your school requires. You need to speak with an advisor for a more concrete answer. About the pre entrance exam, most schools do require it regardless of the degree you are getting, while others do not. Find out from your school and what test it is. Also, what are the scores you need to get for your school to consider "passing" (varies from school to school)

My school requires this to even attempt to apply:

Eng 101

Literature

Alg I and II

Intro to Psych

Live Span and Development

Sociology

Computer 101

Public Speaking

Foreign Language

Human Biology

Organic and Inorganic Chemistry

A&P I and II

Microbiology

Each course is 16 weeks.

Again, make sure you get all the 411 about what your school's requirements are.

Good Luck, :p

Check with your school. In addition to what you mentioned the school I went to required high school chemistry. If you haven't had it then you might have to take that.

The other courses people mentioned above were coreq courses in my program, not pre-reqs and you could get in nursing school without them, as long as you were taking them alongside nursing.

My school requires College Algebra, College English, A&P, Microbiology and a Nursing philosophy class before you apply.

You get points for all the other classes you have completed which are necessary to graduate with the ADN, they are as follows: Speech, Psychology, Sociology, PE, Arts, and Humanities.

My school only requires algebra, chemistry, and biology to be admitted. But since it goes by a point system, no one can get in without finishing other core courses.
