I was wondering if your state's nurse practice act and/or your facility allows you (as an LPN/LVN) to insert N/G tubes.......
The reason I ask is because part of getting into the RN program at my school is to demonstrate N/G insertion, which I've never done. I may be wrong, but I'm almost positive my state doesn't allow LPNs to do this.
I'm not worried about it, since I've read about it, have witnessed it, and plan to watch an educational video before I have to perform it ......

I live in MO, as an LPN we can insert n/g tubes. In fact we did this in our nursing school class to each other. Nothing like the first hand prospective on what it feels like.

Some states do not allow LPN's to insert NG tubes, so if your state is one of them, then why would they expect their incoming LPN to RN students to be able to do this prior to starting the program?
Isn't that part of what transitioning an LPN to RN is all about?
First off, you need to find out your own state's policy on whether or not LPN's can insert NG tubes.
As an LPN, you should become familiar with your scope of practice in your state, so get a copy of it from the BON and get familiar with it.
If your state doesn't allow it, then how can a local school expect LPN's to come into the program already proficient with this skill?
If your state does allow it, then why aren't you doing it as an LPN now?
Does your facility place further restrictions on LPN practice where you work?

this must be something that is allowed by your state practical nursing law. since you don't give your state of residence, you are going to have to search your state's board of practical nursing site and see what the law allows you to do. i'm guessing that insertion of n/g tubes must be allowed if that is a requirement to get into their rn bridge program. you might ask if you can have access to any audio-visual materials the school has on n/g tube insertion in their nursing lab as well as the dummy mannequin to practice on. otherwise, i have two links for you on nasogastric tube insertion that you can review. the main thing with insertion of these tubes is that you verify that they are in the stomach and not accidentally down into the lung.
http://teach.lanecc.edu/nursingskills/ng/ngindex.htm - here is a link to a list of the steps involved in inserting an n/g tube from lane community college. there is a link on this site of a video of the procedure.
there is also a streaming video of "inserting nasogastric tube" listed under the new videos for 2005 at this site of central ohio technical college http://www.cotc.edu/professional/streaming/archive/nursing.htm - i think you need a real one player to see the video. i have seen many of their iv instruction videos are they are pretty good.
