Hi Everyone,I just love all the info on this site and am hoping that someone can give me any info on the hospitals in the south west area of Florida. We are relocating this summer to the Port Charlotte,Fort Myers area.I have been in psych for 15 years.I would love to switch to maternity but I know it is hard to get into.I always hear that you need 1-2 years experience first .i would like any info on nursing in Florida, pay rates etc.I have applied for my license(any day now)I know the pay is a lot less but no more snow and ice will be a welcome change. Thanks:rotfl:

I'm sorry to burst your bubble honey but, my husband and I are trying to get out of Florida. Belive you do not want to really come here do you? There is too much hispanics, too much mexicans that surely know how to screw your day up so that you can"t relax in your own back yard. Its always that deep annoying base boom, boom, boom urban rap unless u r n2 that kind of thing yourself. We hate it and wanna get out!!!!!!!

Yes Florida has a very diverse population. Just finishing a travel assignment in North Florida. During orientation was told that the population of the state is one of the most diverse in the country. Also advised if one has a problem with that to leave now.
As far as the hospitals in that area I cant give you much information. Farther North however in the Orlando area there are literally a hundered options within about 50 miles.
Also strart working on getting your license now or at least 2 to 3 month ahead of time. Florida at times is slow at process of endorsement. And it being the time of year that there are lots of new grads testing it could slow things down. Minimum it takes a month.

Hi There, thanks for the thread.Sorry that Florida is not working out for you, there are cultural likes and dislikes in every part of the country. We have Boom Boom in New York too only difference is that it may be louder!!New York is a great spot if you are young and dont mind the noise and pollution, crime etc. However it is a hard choice for young families and getting pretty expensive to live here.I just have to weigh the positives with the negatives .Right now a little loud music is the least of my worries.Have you checked out other areas of Florida?Everyone deserves peace and quiet:)
Thanks for the info,i will keep looking.

Florida has a bad reputation for its treatment of nurses in general. I know 3 nurses who moved there, worked for 2 years, and moved a little north to get out of Florida. It was not the diverse culture they hated but the way the facilities treated them. Low pay, too many patients, so-so benefits, and the threat of being fired if you made any remarks against the current policy of a facility. One moved to NC, one to Arkansas, and one to SC. I hope if you move it will be everything you and hubby desire. Not everyone has the same experience and you may find the right place and love it. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If you want to get into maternity, you really need to start on the post partum side of things. Psych is so different. You need to get back into taking care of surgical patients. Thankfully, most Ob's are healthy women and it is a very enjoyable field. Start there and then move on to nursery and then on to labor/delivery if you have the desire. L&D is a critical care area (just like ICU) and takes many years of training to even begin to feel comfortable (or be competent).
Good luck. Check out Lee Memorial (I think that's the name) in Fort Myers. They have a large maternity service, if memory serves me correctly.
Thanks so much for the wonderful info,I will check out Lee.I dont mind working in post partum it would be a nice change from psych.Hopefully they hire in post partum, thanks again.:)
