Registered practical nurses

Published

Hello, i graduated as an rn but did not pass the license exam. I am now going to try to go for an LPN. I am just wondering what floors LPN's can work on in ontario? And what specific skills RPN's can do? (Blood administration, trach care, chest tubes?) im trying to figure out basically what i cant do so i dont get confused for the exam. Also i really love the hands on skills and i love working in peds, and surgery and was wondering if i could continue to work in these areas as an LPN?

Skills are dependent on hospital policy not on national policy.

Why does Ontario permit failed RN candidates to practice as practical nurses is a better question!

Because RN grads are qualified and can also work as RPNs once they are licensed? It's not that hard to comprehend.

But if you can't pass the RN NCLEX you aren't qualified to be an RN, and taking LPN NCLEX seems like going for a "consolation prize". LPN's need a good knowledge base and someone who can't pass NCLEX RN doesn't necessarily have that.

RPNs are more than just failed RNs.

Ontario is the only province that permits this.

and it seems that the difference between the two roles is not clear enough for Ontario RN graduates. It's not all about skills. Delegation and differing levels of responsibility are huge factors.

Whick units can a PN be charge on? PNs know this, it's basic knowledge.

Bring back the days when graduation from a school of practical nursing was mandatory for being eligible to write for PN registration.

Ontario has RPNs not LPNs.

Skills will vary from facility. You should not be trying to focus what skills you need to do but the theory and patho behind that. We can teach anyone to preform a skill. Families can suction, PSWs can change a foley, but it takes a skilled nurse to teach them how. Nursing is much more than a series of tasks.

I cannot imagine the PN exam asking you trick questions about things you cannot do.

The PN exam is challenging and you will need to study, not just ask questions on an on-line forum.

NS does this too actually....I worked with an RN grad who couldn't pass the exam so she challenged the LPN exam and worked as an LPN instead. This was when the RN exam was only permitted to be written and failed 3 times before denile.....they can now write the RN exam an indefinite amount of times which is a whole other topic lol.
