It takes so much more skill to understand the human mind and emotions than it does to give a shot.
as a nurse or a student, what does it mean to you

Giving a shot is a mechanical skill that can be learned by anybody. Listening to a pt, to what they do and don't say, takes a skill that not everyone has.

I can prep an Ativa or demeral tubex in less than a minute and give an injection in just a couple of minutes, but to try to get a patient to settle down and gain insight as to why the medication is "needed" requires patience, knowleged, understanding, commication, TIME & EFFORT..
I find it best to use these skills early and often when working with patients, that have problems that manifest themselves in physiological or physical ways. That often reduces the need for a shot. Something about an ounce of prevention vs. a pound of cure....

Nurses deal with people.
People are more than just charts, lab results and medical diagnoses.
To put it somewhat simply

Giving a shot is the administering function of a nurse while understanding the human mind and emotions i believe is more of the caring function of the nurse. Its assessing the patient beyond the physical pain.
