265 Questions

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

So I took the NCLEX exam yesterday and had 265 questions. Needless to say, I am totally convincing myself that I failed. I cannot think of anything else. I am completely consumed by it. I was also told by one of my Kaplan instructors that if you get to 265 questions, whether or not you get the last question right determines if you passed or failed the exam. Does anyone know if this true?

Not necessarily true.

Good luck to you!

Not true at all. The test is trying to determine 2 things:

1. The level you function at, and

2. A statistical level of certainty regarding that level.

Some people - regardless of ability - are just hard to peg with statistical accuracy. But, at 265 questions, the computer determines that enough questions have been answered that statistical accuracy equates to demonstrated accuracy.

At that point, the computer stops looking for statistical accuracy and reports the actual level of competency - where you are at.

It has nothing to do with whether you answer the last question, or any particular question right or wrong.

Your chances of passing at 265? Roughly 87%, same as every other first time test taker at every other question.

It's a misconception that, if you don't get 75 questions, the machine keeps asking you questions to give you a 'chance' to bring your level up to passing. Indeed, as soon as the computer determines your level with statistical accuracy, it stops.

If it can't do that, it takes it to 265. But, that is a search for validation of your level of function and says nothing, per se, about your ACTUAL level of functioning.

Best Wishes! I prayed for you, let us know!

Good luck with your results! The number of questions you get DOES NOT MEAN PASS/FAIL. You can pass with any number of questions. Good luck!

Hi ,

I know how you feel I sat nclex recently, agonized over the fact that I got all 265 questions and found out weeks later I passed so hang in there.

i heard about that thing also when i was reviewing.if you got the last question right, then you passed.i couldn't really say if it's true or not but it happened to some people.i got a friend who took the exam with 265 questions and failed.she took it the 2nd time and again with 265 questions.but this time she passed.goodluck to you!

Getting the last question right or wrong does not determine pass/fail. Just another myth. :) Good luck!

Hello to all. I would first like to thank all of you for the best wishes, prayers, and kind thoughts. It is great to know that there is support out there and others who understand what I am going through. Second, I would like to share with all of you that I PASSED. I found out yesterday and started to cry. I was so happy, relieved, and in shock. So again, thank you to everyone out there and good luck to those of you are waiting for their results and who still have to take the exam. Sincerely, lilmel80
