Not sure if this is the place to address the question, but I am asking for my mother since I don't have an answer to it. She has her LVN license for many years, last year got her RN license, now the board sent her a LVN renewal notice which she has to fill out, if she chooses inactive, she still has to pay a fee? because that's what it says on there. Confused!! can someone please clarify ? or do you notify the board that you are a RN now and won't be practicing as a LVN? thanks!

    Just don't renew. She is an RN now, and will be held to those standards. I just let my LPN license lapse after I became an RN.

    She doesn't need to have both the LVN and the RN license. The RN license covers everything the LVN license covers, with more added. Going inactive is for people who haven't gotten an advanced license (like RN is, compared to LVN) but aren't going to need their license for awhile. Example: a person who isn't working for a few years while she raises her family... Then when she wants to be active again, she can get an active license without going through taking the "test" all over again.

    I would think you could just send a letter to whoever sent her the information to renew her LVN, but I don't know that she needs to do that.

    As the above two posters stated, don't renew. You can not be an LPN once an RN. They sent that in error. Throw it away and tell moms, to keep her RN license current. Peace,

    I'd ask my state board. In SC I found most of my friends just chose to lapse, but I asked the BON and they suggested I keep my RN as INACTiVE. I know that doesn't translate exactly to your mom's case but lapsing something you worked for so hard seems like tossing it away. I paid no fee, but I am still an RN-just inactive for the while.
