question about pre-reqs

Published

Hey!

I am looking to do an RN program in the sf bay area fall 2011. I noticed schools require a general psych course and an English 1A course. I tested out of English 1A and took intro to psych my first year in college (1994). Will they waive the requirement for me or will I have to retake those classes? I have a BA, for what it's worth! I have tried contacting a couple of people at local junior colleges but no one has gotten back to me yet so thought maybe someone here might know. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a BA, I assume you must have completed a year of undergrad college level English course. If you haven't taken Freshman Comp then I assume you are going to have to take it. As with the general psych course.

I have a previous BA, and had tested out of one of my English classes by taking the AP exam in high school. The school I'm applying to now for an accelerated BSN is accepting my AP credit for their English requirement, as well. Your intro to psych should transfer, assuming it's the right number of credits. It will really depend on the school(s), but my guess is you'll get credit for both English and psych from your previous coursework, since your previous (I'm assuming accredited?) institution accepted them. Some schools do have weird policies about transfer credit though, so it's best to go in person, bring in a transcript, and sit down with an advisor. Good luck!

When you say test out, are you talking about CLEP? Most places accept it, but you should verify that with the places you plan to apply. If you are talking about CLEP, you can check on the college board website to see which schools accept CLEP.

Each school is different, but I doubt you have to retake Psych. I did psych in the 90's and my school accepted those credits. When I go on to my MSN program, I will have to retake Abnormal Psych because it needs be 5 yrs or less.
