Question about Hemoglobin and Hematocrit

Kidney's secrete erythopoeitin, the hormone responsible for the stimulation of RBC's.

Just adding: hypervolemia r/t decreased kidney function could be a cause as well...as the above pointed out.

Yep, hemodilution.

One of my favorite words. It just OOZES that I know what I'm talking about, don't it.

It's kinda like saying, "pre-renal". Not in relation to each other. Just they're both 'cool' words to use.

The antonym for hemodilution, btw, is "dryer than a popcorn fart." Or so one of my co-workers maintains. Hope that's not too pg-13.

How is H&H affected by the Genitourinary system?

Please Help my client a male has a low H&H and this is one of the questions my instructor wants me to know. (Hemoglobin=11.2, Hematocrit=34)

Dehydration can effect the hematocrit because of lessened fluid volume. The kidneys also manufacture Erythropoiten which stimulates the production of RBC's.

You all opened my eyes, and there it was in print in my Med Surg book. Yep! RBC production is controlled by the kidneys. Erythropoietin stimulates bone marrow to produce RBCs and prolongs the life of existing RBCs.
