It depends on where you work. If it's a monthly hospital orientation/skills orientation then yes, it will be a problem. You have a very respectable excuse, but, bottomline is, it is not a positive first impression. Hopefully the above is not the case and it will not cause a huge problem. I wish you well.
I would hope any manager would be willing to work around your particular situation since it's not something you could have predicted or should be punished for. Most hospitals have frequent orientation sessions for new employees, so I wouldn't think it will be a huge problem since you won't count as staffing initially anyways. If you are entering some kind of new nurse residency program or specialty training offered once a year, pushing it back might not be an option. I'd be very hesitant to work for a manager who gave you a hard time about this! Thanks to your husband for his service.

Have any of you ever requested to have your orientation start date be a couple weeks later or so? Was it ok'd?
I just called the nurse manager and left her a message requesting that, and hopefully i'll hear back from her today or tomorrow.
My husband was supposed to be back from deployment in the next week or week and a half, but they want him to stay until the beginning of february or so. (We're all upset about it). Anyway, he was the one who is supposed to pick up the kids from daycare before they close, and he won't be here when I need to start on the floor. So, I'm hoping she will ok this :/
