Thanks for this support stickie, I am a new grad nurse going on 6 months on a med/surg floor and still feel overwhelmed. We have team nursing where we have 10 pts., 5 of them are RN pts and the other 5 go to the LVNs but I am still in charge of all 10. Other nights I only have 5 pts with 2 that are TPCs. I love nursing, but sometimes I want to quit because it is just too much work. Also, I still am having trouble giving reports to the next shift. What is the best way to give report where a nurse will not look at you and have an attitude regarding hand off reports. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. rosstat2

Hi everyone, I have a question. I'm new to HH and just started seeing this pt. The first 7 days, I had to see her for IV antibiotic therapy. Then she was to be seen by an LVN after the IV therapy was done, but she refused and requested me to do the follow up. I saw her last week for the start of the follow up, but now I have called her 3x and she is always having an excuse. She states she's going out (shopping, other appts, seeing friends). Call me later she tells me. What is the procedure for this? Do I call my agency or call her one more time to set up an appt? My HH job is only part time and I work at a hospital full time 3 days/12hrs. Please let me know. Thanks for any input.

Thanks for this post. I too am a newbie RN. I am on a med/surg floor with team nursing and TPC. When I have Team Nursing, I have a total of 10 patients and if my LVN is not from my floor but a floater, I have to assess and chart on 10 patients. As far as TPC, I will have a total of 5 patients and I do po meds, accuchecks, IV's, etc. I have been on the floor for 2 months and everyday is killing me. I love nursing, but... I have applied to a county clinic where I live and have successfully passed their civil service interview. I am on an eligible list, waiting to be appointed (praying everyday). The position is 5 days a week, but at a clinic setting. I don't know what else to do. I am working overtime everyday, crying most of the time when I get off work. Thanks for this site, so at least I can see that it is not just the hospital I work in where this goes on. I told myself I will only stay for one year or till I can't stand it anymore. Thanks for all the advise here. I am a new grad and I too work in a med/surg unit with 8-10 patient ratios . We do team nursing, but even with team nursing, I still have to assess all 8-10 patients that night, give ivp pain meds, charting, etc. It can be overwhelming at times , but I take it one step at a time. I am learning each time I work on the floor. I gave myself one year to work on this floor and them plan to transfer to what I want to do. I had an interview for a RN 1 position for the county yesterday and was told I would be put on a waiting list. So hopefully that pans out. Just keep up the good work, be flexible and just keep on swimming. I guess we all have to start somewhere. Good luck.

I am in california and I am working in a med/surg unit which I previously worked on under my IPN. When I passed my RN boards this April 2008, got rehired and was on orientation 3 days for day shift, 2 weeks of class orientation, and the 3 nights of orientation. Tonight, I will be on my own. We use team nursing with total of 10 patients (RN gets 5, LVN gets 5, we have a tech). We also do TPC with total of 6 patients, no LVN, sometimes a tech. ] ]The first time I worked on this floor under my IPN was the same time frame for orientation - 3 days on with a preceptor, 3 nights on, and 2 wks of class orientation. ] ]I feel that the floor orientation is not enough. I live in California and I also want to work home health, but everyone company I have called has told me home health RN's must have a year's experience before they can do home healthy. I don't know what state you are in (forgot to look), but this is the law as far as I am being told. Good luck.

I work on a med/surg floor. Acuities run from 3-4. My duties are IV's IVPB and pushes, do new admits, update charting, call mds as needed. The LVNs give po meds and dressing changes, accu checks, call meds regarding BS. The techs are vs, passing out water, bed/bath.

Hi everyone, Appreciate a little input. I am a new grad nurse and on my second week of orienting. Started my third night this Friday (yesterday) with a preceptor. We had a total of 9 pts., with an LVN, and nurse tech. My preceptor told me I was ready to take the whole run by myself, asked how I felt about that and I told her that I was not ready and I would take 5 pts while she took the other 4. She agreed, but said eventually I would have to do the whole run anyways. Her plan was to have me take the 9 pt run and she would shadow me and be there if I had questions. Told her i was not ready to take the whole 9 pts. Of course it was one of those nights from heck and I felt like a chicken with its head cut off. I was just trying to keep up with things. I know it was only 5 pts. on my own, but it was busy. I do understand that I will be having 9-10 pts a night eventually on my own, but I just felt a little overwhelm on my 3rd night of orienting. The past 2 nights I only had 4 pts on my own and those happened to be TPC. My questions are: 1. How can I organize myself in order to take care of 9 -10 pts, be able to look at lab results, put out "fires" as needed. Do 24 hour chart check, be able to review h&p in main chart? I understand too that some nights are good/bad., but how does a newbie handle this. 2. Also, how do we handle nurses tech that have been working for a long time and will gladly tell you what you are doing wrong, or not helping you out, not answering call lights (and when they do, make comments that nurses are lazy - they can't answer their own call lights). I have personally gone in the room when the light is on if I'm close by and happen to see the call light come on because I wanted to avoid these comments from NT. Don't get me wrong, there are good techs and bad techs, how does a newbie handle the bad techs (I say thank you for all your help at end of my shift, but they don't seem remember that at all next time because they actually have to work) 3. Finally, I gave morning report and felt really, really STUPID because the nurse coming on would ask me questions and I did not have an answer. Is there a better way to hand off report (some nurse wants alot of info, and some don't). Please give me some input for this newbie nurse. Tell me it does get better, and I won't feel inadequate and eventually will start thinking critically, will know how to organize myself, and will give adequate report to the next shift RNs. I really love nursing. I feel that I have to grow a very thick skin in order to survive my FIRST YEAR. Thank you in advance to any input to anyone who was ever in my shoes. LOVE this site.

I failed the NCLEX my first time (190 questions) using the Hurst Review. Some of my classmates used the Hurst review and passed, but Hurst just did not work for me. Then I went on the allnurses website and read about Suzanne's Plan. Followed her study guidelines to the letter. I passed the NCLEX RN on my second try with 75 questions following Suzanne's Plan. Please don't give up. Try Suzanne's Plan and good luck.

i too failed the exam on my first try. then i found out about ms. suzanne's plan and used this to study for my second time. thank you a million times ms suzanne!! i also used the following strategies from kaplan. some of these strategies do work for the nclex and, if not, i chose the best answer (which usually means, which one will not kill the patient) safety first is the motto. hope these can help future nclex test takers. thread edited to remove copyrighted material, not permitted to be posted here due to us copyright laws. suzanne4 the following are some prayers i said while i was studying and before i took the test: it helped calm my mind and diminish my doubts about what i know and didn't know regarding the nclex. today i will choose faith over fear. thank you for the love of the universe that will surround me in everything i do today. thank you for the fun, laughter, and joyous surprises that will flood into my life today. i give thanks that my cells are attracting absolute well-being and complete harmony in my body now. today, i am letting go of all negative feelings about me. blame be gone unworthiness be gone, doubt be gone, guilt be gone with gods blessing, i passed the nclex on my second try. good luck to everyone. we can all beat the nclex monster thank you again ms suzanne for all your help!:urck:
