  1. Older student here and like some of the previous posters said; you can start off with some of your GE's if you haven't already to get the feel of school since it's been a while; get a white board (at Costco I think it's like 20 bulks for a nice size) and get a calendar, electronic or paper whichever you prefer; when you get the syllabus for the classes, put all your exam and quizes on the calendar so you can see your timeline easily; once you get to your sciences; I brought a recorder to record the professor. On the weekends, since I work a full time job, the recorder helped go back on some things. The whiteboard will help for writing and practicing for memorization and for writing down topics for yourself. Hope this helps!
  2. I'm starting my pre-reqs now and I'm taking 3 classes: (Stats online, Pysch online, and speech in class W nights) about 10 semester units this spring. I'm working 40 hours per week and a part time second job. When I start the science classes, I might only take 1 science per semester in fall but it requires lab and it's in class so I might have to cut back. It's doable and if you can find the classes online. Not sure if your college allows online science courses though.
  3. Hello, I am currently taking some prereqs over at SBVC and I have a question if anyone can help. Do we need to take Organic 1 and 2 or can we take the Intro to Organic Chem and Biochem class? I've emailed the Azusa Pacific Inland Empire but haven't heard back from them. Thank you in advance.
  4. Thank you for this. As a long time lurker, I'm starting the plunge with taking some prerequisites at a nearby community college. At times, I'm wondering about if this is for me then I read this and feel more compelled to go to nursing. The criticism is such great advice to understand and reflect about especially our new generation coming in. Something to take with me as I venture forth. Thank you again for inspiring me.
  5. Thank you for all these comments about the GPA. It feels good to have such support especially for those who lurk here, wondering if we can take plunge and go into nursing. I too have less than 3.0 in the last 60 units and I am worried that I'm doomed with some prerequisites that can only be averaged once I re-take a few them. I'm hoping that when I take my science courses and rock them, it will prove I can do nursing to admissions. I'm in the middle of changing careers, age 32 licensed social worker, who eventually wants to be an NP. There are so many plans for me to get married, have kids, and all the meantime changing careers and starting prereq's. Such change! Looking to faith and the journey to help me not rush through everything and get to the top!
  6. I'm 32 years old, and I have been a social worker for about 7-8 years. I'm a licensed mental health therapist. Recently, I am having a change of heart in my career. Instead of the charging full ahead and starting my prerequisites to become a nurse, I went to volunteer at the local hospital to really see if nursing would be my path. Particularly, I've want to become a FNP. Four months into volunteering, and I'm still on this undecided path. The nurses around me say "jump in and go for it. Don't worry about the finances." Maybe I'm afraid to take the leap but thinking about how to finance school with a mortgage, and loans from my other degree, may be it's not possible. The other fear is quitting my job and finally going full time in to school. Is it too late to be a nurse as the time ticks by? Looking for thoughts on people who changed their careers midway through life and the outcome of your decision. Or any thoughts in general would be greatly appreciated. Background: I have my masters in counseling but my BA was in liberal arts. Unfortunately, there were no science prerequisites so I would need to do them all over again.
