Funny patient names by nurses
The newest "strange" name around here ODESSA TX is Nevaeh, Heaven backwards. I worked with a Sweetie Lovejoy, truth. We also had a mother that had twin and they were Joe Albert and Joe Alfred, then 2 years later a Joe Anthony, and the father was not Joe!

Recomendations for neonatal stethoscopes
I will only use a Littman. I have 3 one for neonated one for pedi and one for adults. They are the most reliable and you can buy replacement parts very easily. Our unit only uses Littmans. We have one for each baby at their bedside and when they are discharged they are cleaned and ready for the next admission. Even after years of use, we rarely have one "go bad". Our biggest problem is them "walking off" with a resident or student.

What punishment should this nurse get?
A one time event? No one damaged, no, maybe a letter of counsel in her file. If it was a habit yes. She then becomes a liability.

"What do you need Christmas off for? You don't have kids!" (rant)
My husbad, sister, daughter-in-law and myself are all in the medical field. We realized a long time ago that the most important thing about the holidays was not the actually date, but getting together as a family to celebrate the event. For that reason we have holidays sometimes two weeks early or late. We still have something small with our immediate family, once again whenever we can arrange it. My son's except this because this is the only thing they have ever known. And now my grandaughter is adaptine very well. Our only problem was the "non-medical" family that never under stood why we had have special arrangement because we worked the holidays. Maybe this mother should realize it's the people not the day that make an event special.

my dream; to become a nurse in the NICU, please let me kno how you got there!
I have been working in NICU for 18 years. I have been in nursing for 26. I went to nursing school after high school, recieved my LVN and begin to work in PICU. After having my first child, I went back to school and recieved my RN, and second child. I then worked several different areas through out the hospital until I landed, quite by accident, in NICU. I was suppose to be just a 6 week stint, but I fell in love with it and have never left. Most hospitals want you to have a little experience (6 months to 2 years) before going into intensive care. Be very careful....almost everyone that is wanting to be a nurse wants to either work Pedi or NICU. This is not for everyone. It is one of the most stressful, frustrating and heart breaking area in nursing. It is also one of the rewarding. I requires quick thinking, life saving decision making, and extremely specialized skills. You will have to work as a team, tolerate difficult parents, irritated Neo's and the "clueless". Diplomacy, patience and a gentle tone is a must! But if I had to do it all again, I would in a heartbeat!!
