What have you learned in nursing school that was utter nonsense?
Unless you are working psych, it serves no purpise to do r o groups. They were a pita when I was in school and I'm glad I learned hiw to do them. In my 12+ years in mental health, I ran a few hundred. Thanks for your share.

I have not seen it live. There is some very compelling documentation on YouTube if you are interested. Thank you for asking.

What have you learned in nursing school that was utter nonsense?
Thank you for pointing this out. Iam new here and navigating the ins and outs of the site has challenged me. A slight organic brain issue also hampers my style. But I'm here, I'm alive, I'm happy.

What have you learned in nursing school that was utter nonsense?
We do what works and no two nurses approach a given issue the same. I applaud you for doing something. It is disheartening to watch someone do nothing. Thank you for your comments.

Do Antidepressants Work? Maybe Not.
Here's the deal. We do whatever works. Tricyclics, MAO inhibitors, serotonin uptake inhibitors, lithium salts. Our endocrine systems are taxed by environmental poisen and stress hormones are like male urethras, they don't know if they're coming or going. I like the writings of my good friend Dr. John Gray. His Mars/Venus work has opened us up to taking the reins and coming up with our own answers for our woes. Gender brain chemistry is controlable. That is to say, you ultimately control the release of oxyticin, serotonin, testosterone, and other hormones through interaction with the environment. I can give you a list of 100 ,things to do that will increase your oxytocin and his testosterone, and you won't spend one red cent. John Gray doesn't pay me fir promoting his ideas. He pays me with knowledge. The man is amazing. Only Harry Potter has outsold John's books.

Men in the nursing field, is there a problem?
I just have to jump in here. Let me preface my responses with my opinion that nursing is not a female dominated profession. I write again, NOT FEMALE DOMINATED. I have almost 30 years working in the field. 27 years licenced. If you going to be successful and accepted in nursing, get off the gender boat. There are no gender lines. We are all professionally trained health care providers that out into action proven scientific principles. It doesn't matter what gender you're born with. If you are a nurse, you are a nurse. If you start categorizing colleagues by gender, well, you might as well add sexual orientation to the mix, right? No! Now your questions, #1 I became a nurse because healing is in my dna. My grandmother was a curandera, some say witch, I don't. She healed. My Relatives from South Dakota are andvwere venerated Medicine Men and Women. It was destiny. #2 I have ZERO reservations. Every colleague is my equal. Period. Don't forget that all humabs start iff as female. That's right! We are both genders until our dna decides what we get assigned. Stereotypes are sociological prejudices. They exist inly if you guve them power, I do not. #3 Nursing science is geared towards learning scientific principles and theory. Gender is not a factor that determines how well you learn what is taught. #4 Discrimination hapoens every where and in all circles if the human experience. Was I ever treated differebtly? Yes. Were my civil rights violated? Never. #5 Help is not gender based. I ask whoever is available. Sometimes a male presence us needed abd vuce versa. Cautious is not the word I would use. Prudent works fir me. Prudence is the undustry standard. Protect yoyr self at all times. Male or female. #5 a. I would like to add that my favorite part of being a nurse was that I was able, in many instances, to show the women how to do it. In my humble opinion, in my experience, I did the job with a little more compassion than my female counterparts. I was especialky proud of one patient evaluation that read " I would like to thank Joe for giving me the most discreet bedbath, and only bath offered, during my six day hospitalization". Leave it to the guys to show the girls how to do it. Thank you fir the chance to express what I've wanted to express for many years. Have a great career as a nurse, no gender please. Do what you've learned and yiu will have no problems. When you get to the bare essentials, we're all equal.

Struggling with work/life balance
Go natural. If you're not allergic to it, 3 cups of camomile tea a day. I am a Certified Hypnotist, former nurse retired, and I do Spirutual counseling and intuitive work. My sense is that toxicity is an issue. Yoga is a great idea. Breathing exercises. Probiotics. Meditation. Go to You Tube and learn a little self hypnosis. I think this will benefit you most. Personal message me anytime. I'm here to help. Good luck.

My husband doesn't want me on ALLNURSES
All dried up now. Shall we move forward and concentrate on the issue? Thank you.

My husband doesn't want me on ALLNURSES
Good luck with resolving conflict in the home.

My husband doesn't want me on ALLNURSES
Is this my ex pretending to be Farawyning? If not, I do respectfully request intelligent mindful responses. Battling wits with an unarmed person just isn't fair. We're trying to give insight to a sensitive topic, relationships. I aooligize if I touched a sensitivity. It was not my intention. Peace.

My husband doesn't want me on ALLNURSES
Your husband has deep seeded issues, but he's your husband, and You must love him. Why else would you tolerate such nonsense? My ex didn't want me to be a nurse. Thus, my ex. Be gentle and reassuring and keep the harmony intact. In my humble opinion, this request is not one I would concede. Yes, marriage requires sacrifice. Some people like being controlled. I personally do not like that. Good luck.

What have you learned in nursing school that was utter nonsense?
All of you that like this, think about it. This "moderator" says reality orientation "does not work". That is bold. Especially for one trained in the scientific process. Like all nurses have been. She has given no evidence or data to support the ineffectiveness of reality orientation groups. I have personally lef hundreds of R O groups and I think they are an invaluable assessment too.. You do remember assessment, I'm sure. These groups are not meant for "reorienting". If that is the goal then yes, you will fail. When used as an assessment tool, they can be fun, humorous, and insightful. If you want to claim they don't work, show me your data.

Experience of Family Member With Mental Illness and Nurses' Experience with Psychiatric Nu
How brave of you to ask this question. Mental illness has an effect on family, no question. Will it affect how you practice? Who can say, it's never been researched. One thing is for certain, it gives you greater insight into the benefits of personal experience. Mental illness touxhed my family. My ex wife, also a RN, has a ""number". I have a number. We're all subject to a diagnosis. Your research sounds very exciting and it will take you down many dark hallways. Look into Whitehouse mental illness. Some of our greatest leaders suffered. Look at their deeds. What was their passion? It is a reflection of their n i experience. Keep me posted. If I can help out some way, let me know. Best wishes.

F's and W will i be able to get a job in nursing?
Not so. Your point is well taken. This may not be a good nursing candidate. You really have no way of knowing for sure. I'm not saying your wrong. I'm saying you might be mistaken. I am this person in some ways. ALL the patients I cared for in 28 years, most anyway, think I was one heck of a nurse. It happened once, it could happen again. Cut him a little slack.
-
F's and W will i be able to get a job in nursing?
You name it, I 've earned it. D,F,Withdrawal, incomplete, . Doesn't mean you can't fulfill your dream. They said I would never be a nurse. They wouldn't let me take care of thier mother. My chances were nil to zilch. I proved them naysayers wrong. That wasn't my intention, it just turned out that way. Follow your dreams and your heart. No one can stop you.
-
F's and W will i be able to get a job in nursing?
Not true. I have F's, W's, incompletes, D's, you name it, I've earned it. Anyone can do whatever they want. Try at least. It isn't for me to say otherwise. After retiring from nursing, I was a instructor at a for profit college. Everything is possible. Every minute is more than reality, they are potentials.

Possible to get into nursing school with a C? Has anyone ever?
My gpa when I was accepted into nursing school was C+. I rarely got an A in a class. I can count the A's I earned on one hand. Don't get to caught up with grades, learning is not reflected in gpa. That's why they call it "average". Many a 4.0 student has failed state nursing exams. Some, never pass the exam. If grades are really important to you, become a teacher. Lol. Just kidding. Best wishes.

I guess retired nurses find ways to keep being excited about a profession that has given them so much to be grateful for. I've sent a friend request. Please consider. I promise to always protect and respect your wishes.

What path to take?
Denise, I taught medical assisting. It's a good gig, but it can also lock you into the "money" trap. You get used to the income, you quality of life improves, and when you decide to go back to school, you have difficulty because you depend on the income. LPN is like a LVN in California. They haven't been fazed out. Look into government state funded programs. That helped my career. You will be successful, I see it in your words. You'll be a fine nurse one day and your children will say "that's my mom, she's a nurse". See it, believe it, manifest it. Don't wait for it. Make it happen! Good luck and God bless you and yours
