Nursing in Canada
I used to work at downtown ED in Toronto and it's a norm to get 5-6 pt. 4 will be tele, and a few hallways. Don't remember the last time I had 4 pt. I had a friend from NYC ED and she's saying they have a tech doing blood work, ecg, VS etc for them. We don't have anything here, it's all primary care so you have to do the basic care for all your assigned pt

What am I doing wrong?
Hi! I used to work at ER in Toronto and I know there's only a few ways to get into ER 1) consolidated at ER and didn't screw up during your consolidation 2) have a few years of medsurg experience 3) have previous ER experience from other provinces or ON hospitals 4) new RN graduates who consolidated at an acute setting, have ACLS, CC1 certificates + luck 5) you personally know the manager or the nursing educator and I know a few hospitals are hiring RPNs on medicine floors/NRT but they only hire those who did their consolidation on that floor or had other acute experiences, unfortunately it's very competitive for RPNs to find a job in the hospitals, GL!

New here and would love some advice please!
Hi! I recently landed an ER job with AHS as an external candidate and I've gotten over 10 calls for interviews like other ER, psych, ICU, one public health centre, and OR. I've applied over 50 jobs started around end of August (I applied to everything except medsurg). I think AHS is really slow in responding, but once they called it means interview! I'm also a new RN, graduated last year summer. I would suggest you keep applying if you have no connections. They definitely prefer internal candidates than external, even I find it such a hassle to hire me as an external candidate lol If you have extra certificates related to paeds, maternity, geriatric, it's 100% a bonus since community is all about primary healthcare. I know someone from L&D got a job with public health.

Anyone got hired through the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative?
Hi Fiona, just wondering does AHS give you pension for temporary FT/PT job? If I remember correctly, only casual doesn't have pension right?

Anyone got hired through the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative?
Hi I started my first nursing job as NGG and they offered me a FT medsurg job after that but I quit cuz I wanted PT. Then I moved to AB and I got another FT job offer... I think PT is harder to find than FT for some reasons

Moving to another Province: Obtain a license or a Job first?
I just got my license in AB and I'm applying from Ontario, took me a year because I didn't know all the documents expire after 6 months after submission... I wish they stated this on their website

New Grad RN: Moving from BC to Alberta
Hi! I saw a lot of postings from one of the ER in Edmonton, RAH. Usually, when a unit hires so many constantly, it shows a toxic environment to work/bad management or they're really short and the turnover rate is too high. Do you know anything? Thanks in advance ?

Humber or George Brown for RPN? Is George Brown really that bad?!
Dont think school matters a lot, it all depends on your own ability and networks to find a job after that

Patient to nurse ratio?
Just wondering how about Alberta? Anyone knows?
-
Patient to nurse ratio?
Medical is 1:4/5, medicine is 1:4-6, psych is 1:5-9, emergency is 1:4-6. The last time I or 1:4 was a long time ago ?

Dear Alberta nurses...
Thanks for the input, how do you go about networking with the managers? Do you attend conferences, events etc? My goal is to get into ED by end of this year since I’m working in ED now and I know they hire more than regular floors since the turnover rate is high. I’ll start applying soon, finger crossed ?

Northern Nursing
AHS is hiring northern nursing now. They’re advertising everywhere. I’m sure with your ER and ICU experience, you’re the perfect candidate. I’m very keen in joining doctors without border since one mission is about 4-6 months. I’m new grad currently working in ER and hope eventually I can gain some ICU experience. Just wondering if it’s easy to switch from ER to ICU and how years did you stay with ER before the switch? Thanks!

Dear Alberta nurses...
Dear nurses, I need your help again! Haven't had much success in jobs in Edmonton but here in my current city, I have two job offers (both PPT) right now and I am having a hard time deciding which to take. One is emergency and the other one is PACU with employer sponsered ICU course. I am still keen to get a job in Edmonton eventually, so in your opinion, which of these two jobs will let me gain as much skills as possible and make me more desirable for my next potential employer? Long term wise I still prefer hospital setting. FYI I am a recent graduate with just 4 months of medsurg experience. Thanks again!

Dear Alberta nurses...
Dear nurses, thanks for your insight, and to be honest, after reading your responses I have become somewhat discouraged and it seems a very daunting task to get a job in Edmonton. However I am very eager to rejoin my husband as we have already been seperated for a few years. Could you please offer some advice on what I could do to increase my chances besides just blindly applying for almost every posting that I see? I can't see myself just applying and nothing happening for another year or even two. I am quite lost as to what's the next step, perhaps give up and just stay in my current province...
