  1. So you can look the families of your patients in the eyes and say: "We did everything we could"
  2. I have four pairs of Asics and cycle through them
  3. Scissors / Trauma Shears Penlight Quality writing implements (you may even want to put your name on them because they WILL disappear)
  4. Nah I'm still around. I asked here because that's how I learn as a nurse - I look for the answer myself and then if I can't find it, I see if anyone else knows. The conversation rapidly deteriorated into tangents instead of staying on-topic, so I did not persist. Although now it is a moot point, I am still interested to know what consequences exist, if any, for the original question.
  5. I am actually interested in knowing the answer to this question myself - Google searches are relatively fruitless.
  6. There are also numerous RN-to-MSN programs available nowadays so one could acquire an MSN without working as a staff RN.
  7. Worked my first year at a rehab hospital and we used to have crash carts with Epi, Sodium Bicarb, atropine, etc. which were removed because they removed the 'Hospital' designation. It is now pretty much a SNF and we only have BLS at our disposal when a code occurs. I have since acquired employment in a Trauma/Surgical ICU and the difference is astounding - I never really felt like a nurse at the rehab facility, but definitely feel like one in TSICU.
  8. My wife does Clinical Research and she still has to go ask patients for samples, give presentations to large groups, etc. so you never really escape 'people', but it does reduce the number considerably. Maybe consider Nursing Informatics...
  9. Hurst review is excellent and they have a bank of either 600 or 900 practice questions.
  10. Troll: One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument Based on the reaction of the OP, my assessment is accurate.
  11. This is a troll - don't worry they go away when you don't feed them.I wasn't interested in my history classes and so they were tedious. I was VERY interested in some of my other classes, but the format caused my attention to drift more than I would like because I'm a visual learner. Perhaps that is your disconnect too - the instructor obviously can't cater the entire lesson to your learning style, but explain your problem to them in a respectful way. If you show them you care about coming to class then they're far more likely to help you and possibly give examples in a different way than if you're a wallflower.
  12. From Amarillo, currently live in Lubbock. Northwest Hospital (NWTH) is the 'County Hospital' of the area so they take the indigent, etc. despite the fact that they are still designated as a For-Profit hospital. Baptist St. Anthony's (BSA) is directly adjacent to NWTH and they are the place to go when you want the nice room with all the amenities because you have the insurance to cover it. There are a few more but they change names so often I don't know what they're called anymore... Triumph last I remember... then some specialty hospitals scattered about. NWTH and BSA are the primary two though and because Amarillo is the largest city within a 60 min span, they get patients from the small rural outliers. Prices between Amarillo and Lubbock are comparable - our mortgage in Lubbock is $1150/mo for a 4 BR, 2 BA, my parents and brothers live in Amarillo and they pay probably the same or comparable to what we do. Sales tax is (price x 1.0825). As far as night life, it is what you make of it. No, it will never be compared to 95% of the cities in CA for cultural endeavors but it depends on what you are into as well. As far as snow goes, we usually get one or two good snowstorms per year which quickly melt anyhow.
  13. Probably depends on where you want to work as well - if you want to go to an ED then working as an EMT would be most beneficial. CNA's do a lot of bedside care so you would benefit as you can see a lot of what goes on and the local hospitals around here hire from within their own CNA/Nurse Tech pools before they outside hire. Absolutely keep the EMT cert current and list everything you have on an application.
  14. I have scrutinized the ANA Code of Ethics, the Texas BoN website, and examined my facility's policies. I tried google searching, but with the myriad of ADN-to-BSN programs being offered online, I could not come up with satisfactory results from my keyword queries. Here is my conclusion: It is not an official garment of my facility and is not worn while I am working, I am not using the title to gain advancement and have not misrepresented myself to my employers or patients, and I have found no evidence of it being a violation (and neither can anyone else apparently). It is comparable to putting "Mixmaster Phiir" or "Love Doctor Phiir" on the jacket - have I attained a master's degree from an accredited mixing university or written a dissertation on love to achieve a PhD? If those terms were on my name badge or any other attire that I don while working, it is certainly unprofessional and should not be worn as it is a misrepresentation and definitely against policy. So I'm going to leave it at that and will no longer reply until such time as a rule or regulation against my own personal, non-employment related garment having currently one incorrect credential is brought to my attention. Thank you all for your replies, sincerely: Mixmaster Love Doctor Phiir, World's Greatest Dad and Philanthropist
  15. Allow me to remind you that saying 'allow me' is asking permission and that I have not mandated anything. I attempted to refine the questions to the ones I wanted answered - I restricted nothing, I can monitor ALL I LIKE, and as for filters - I'll let the forums do that as they have already established what will be filtered in their ToS.
  16. That's all you had to say They don't, I showed the DON and she laughed then gave me a high five. I wear it inside, it goes into my locker for 12 hours until I leave. If it was on my name badge, then I definitely would be remiss in donning it. Nah I think I'll keep wearing it. Yes, I acknowledged that I was mistaken. You'd be surprised how many organizations also have it wrong because I see name badges that have it flipped all the time.I should have just asked the question I wanted an answer for so I could skip all the unsolicited advice.
  17. 1. I felt adequately prepared to do the job, but not adequately prepared to handle emergencies. 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No, my current job is too easy and I don't feel challenged because it's not an acute setting. I have secured a job in an ICU and start next month though - I really do think I will remain in nursing until retirement because it has limitless potential. 5. I actually experienced bullying from an LVN who felt threatened by my being an RN. I was offered greater opportunities for advancement even though she had almost a decade more experience than I did and she didn't like that. To combat this, I often asked her for advice even when I knew the answer already - it kept her ego a bit inflated and made her feel needed I think. 6. Surround yourself with positive people - try not to succumb to negativity. Always be on time, even if others aren't. Own your mistakes. Be good to your aides and they'll be good to you.
  18. I did not feel that it was helpful because it was not answering my question. Thank you for your poignant response and additional information as to the order I mistakenly listed the items.
  19. One of our methods is to tell our patients, "Is there anything I can do for you, I have the time." It lets the patient know that the nurse is not trying to 'escape' the room and the patients feel better knowing they have the undivided attention of his/her nurse.
  20. Allow me to narrow the discussion to these questions.
  21. Is there a penalty for infraction of which you are aware?
  22. I got to 75 and expected it to shut off... then 80... then 85... every five questions I kept expecting it to shut off and it never did. By the time I got to 225 I gave up hope and figured I was going the distance, but then it shut off at 250... 15 short of the max. It's nerve wracking for sure, but at least it's over!
  23. I am fully aware that it is illegal for one who is not a nurse to refer to him/herself as a nurse, but what about the credentials of BSN vs ADN? A little background, I am an Associate's Degree Registered Nurse currently and will finish my BSN in May. I had a jacket embroidered to say my name and then RN, BSN... the embroidering took over a month for my appointment time to get set up and the cost to do it is the same no matter how many letters are applied. If anyone asks, I would tell them that I am not yet a BSN for another four months and that I had the BSN preemptively applied to save time and money, but am I breaking any rules by doing so? I tried to Google the topic and looked through my institution's policy/procedure manual with no result so was wondering if any of you other nurses had some input on the matter. Thanks!
