Psych RNs - what is rewarding for you?
When I see someone clear up. It is amazing to me to see a mother, a father, a teacher, a lawyer, or a doctor, come out of a psychotic state and be able to live and work independently again. Our work is probably one of the most thankless nursing jobs, we are verbally abused most days, but if you can learn to not take it to heart, and realize that they're sick, the work is very rewarding.

Question to all nurses who work in Psych
Typically, on a true behavioral health facility, they should be medically cleared, meaning no tubes or invasive lines because of suicide risk and they don't typically have the staffing for it. In the past, I have reviewed medical paperwork to see if a patient is appropriate for admittance or if they need more medical care. Nurses can pass medications as well as collaborate with other team members about the care. We do rounds with the doctor so they know the status of the patient and what interventions are needed. Psych units are pretty busy because of different behaviors, so don't think you'll be bored, but to cherish the moments that are "quiet". The most important part is patient and staff safety. That itself, is enough to keep you busy and your nursing assessment abilities working! ?

New Grad Psych Nursing
As a new grad nurse, I got my first psych job offer before even passing boards. I first got a job in an outpatient community based setting, and worked my way into an inpatient acute psych unit. It was interesting to see patients in the community setting and I really felt that it helped me with my inpatient nursing abilities. Some hospitals like HCA, have the StaRN program for new grads, but I feel that orientation was enough for me. Psych is kind of like other nursing where you either you love it or you don't, and you learn as you experience it. Congratulations on finishing nursing school and good luck to you!
