UC Davis Medical Center RN Residency Summer/Fall 2018
I also just got an email after reaching out to a recruiter--most Adult ICUs are also not hiring for the August cohort. I wish that they would have had a list of units that were hiring before applying.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford RN Residency Program 2018
Mine is 8am on the 29th. What about you? IDK how to start prepping for a group interview, I barely like to talk about myself hahaha.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford RN Residency Program 2018
Did anyone else receive information about the interview being a group panel, with 4 other new grad candidates? That spikes up the anxiety for me...

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford RN Residency Program 2018
The HR department is going through some changes, the main point of contact is going on maternity leave! Don't give up, they are a little delayed. That is what I last heard from a friend working at LPCH.

UCLA Summer 2018 New Grad Residency
Kris--unfortunately no. So I'm guessing it might not work out for an interview this time around.

Seattle Children's Residency August 2018
natRN, how did you hear back? Did they call you? I applied for Critical Care track as well, have not heard anything. Just wondering if I should still keep my hopes up.

UCLA Summer 2018 New Grad Residency
If anyone could give some insight, I tried to answer the Assessment honestly (not always Strongly Agree on kiss-ass comments). Could it be that they were looking for those types of answers for the Assessment? I wonder if that's what has stopped a lot of people from being interviewed.

Mayo Clinic AZ new grad rn residency 2018
I emailed HR and got an auto generated response that all interviews were scheduled. This is a bummer if true. Should I even bother calling to see if this is the case?

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
Competition is fierce! I did not move forward with PICU but wish best of luck to everyone who is moving forward to all their second-rounds.

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
I had my speed interview today. All I can say is really be yourself! They will ask random questions that will make it easy to put your foot in your mouth if you're not thinking about it. Some related to nursing, most not. There's no way to plan ahead of time except just know your strengths, be yourself, and all they want to do is get to know YOU as a person.

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
I spoke with the recruiter that called me for my interview. From my understanding, she's only in charge of certain units, so I'm not sure who the point of contacts are for non-PICU.

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
When I spoke with her she said she's calling around 30 *from* the pool of PICU folks that applied. I believe that pool was the 200. :) But that's not to say she's done calling people yet, so I'm still crossing fingers for everyone!

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
Can confirm, I also got a call tonight for an in-person interview with PICU next week! :) So excited!
-
CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
My guess is that they are extending video interviews first since those take a while. Crossing fingers that in person ones will be soon.

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
Awesome, thank you so much for this timeline! The anxiety is killing me, but at least we'll hear back in the next 2 weeks.

Mayo Clinic AZ new grad rn residency 2018
Has anyone's application moved from "Received" to "Application Under Review?" One of my applications to the Rochester one moved to Step 2, but not the AZ one. Crossing fingers!

April is so far away!! 😅

CHLA RN Residency Sept 2018
Thanks for this thread! I applied to PICU. Anyone else graduating in May? I psyched myself out at the "Do you have state licensure for this position" question because I was worried that "No" would put me in a separate pile or something.

Insight on Dilaudid?
Wow, yes I knew it was stronger than morphine and that it was an opioid but I guess all I was missing was the fact that people who want the "high" know their desired cocktail.

Insight on Dilaudid?
Hi everyone, Forgive me for being new to all these things that happen (still a student), but during clinicals my patient asked for Dilaudid. I let the RN know, and he rolled his eyes and said "oh, he wants Dilaudid? Everyone wants Dilaudid" quite sarcastically. I've heard that in the ER, drug-seekers frequently ask for the magical "medication that starts with a D." What exactly is the history with Dilaudid in nursing?

How to stay away from smoking!!
I quit smoking a few years back, but you know what I kept saying to myself? There's never going to be a "perfect" time to quit. School will be stressful, your job will be stressful, life in general is stressful. You need to motivate yourself somehow--looking at pictures of lung cancer isn't going to do it. For me it was all personal achievements: I want to be able to run around with my future kids. I want to be able to sing, even when I'm old. I want to smell nice in front of other people. All these things add up in my brain to avoid picking up another cigarette. Also, break habits if you have them. I used to always have a cigarette with coffee. Hardest thing in the world to break, but instead I forced myself to be distracted while I had my cup of coffee (read the news on my phone, listen to music). Habits die hard eventually if you have the willpower. :)

Low GPA applying to Direct Entry NP
As others have mentioned, you're not going to be able to jump straight into an NP position. But if it's a BSN you're looking into, try focusing on your GPA in the sciences. Get all A's in your prereqs--A&P, Micro, etc. Many schools look at your sciences to see how well you've done, and if there are any re-takes or withdrawals in the past. I got accepted into a competitive BSN program with a 2.75 overall GPA (it included my community college GPA, bleh), but I have a 3.9 in the sciences. I also have worked as a PCT for a few years now, have a previous BA degree, and studied abroad to learn Spanish. Hopefully the school will look at you as an overall person/student, but all I can suggest is that you focus really damn hard on your sciences and ace them.

Trouble getting a recommendation
Unfortunately if you didn't form any relationships with your professors during your time in school--even though you've been enrolled only for a year--that's on you. Many students take the relationships with professors for granted, and it's really easy to get to know a professor if you go to their office hours, ask questions in class, and speak up. I would suggest that you focus on that in your semesters to come, but at the time it doesn't sound like many professors would be able to write a letter for you. Oh, and word of advice: DON'T FAKE IT! I had a classmate who needed a letter of rec. and couldn't get anyone to write one for her. She had a friend write her one and signed it off as a professor. Long story short, school looked up the name and booted her from her program. Best of luck. Sorry that it's probably not what you want to hear.

Accelerated BSN too many pre-reqs!
There are programs like the Johns Hopkins BSN that allow you to take the prerequisites online--but I would be very careful. Johns Hopkins takes online prereqs but many schools require an in-person lab with it. And just to throw in my 2 cents, while yes there are a lot of prerequisites to get through, you WILL use them in nursing and will continue to use the knowledge throughout your career. I too had a Bachelor's Degree (Psychology) and never took the hard sciences. But I was determined to do well, had the motivation to finish in as little time as possible, and ended up finishing all my sciences in two semesters (Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Nutrition). It was incredibly tough but I knew what my goal was, and stuck with it. Now I am lucky enough to be starting an ABSN in January. You have the rest of your life to work if nursing is your career path--why rush through school. :) Good luck.

CSUCI Nursing @ Goleta Spring 2016
Hey all! Just got my acceptance letter as well, so excited! I'm looking forward to meeting you all at orientation next month. :) I got accepted with 31 points. Currently working as a PCT, had a BA degree, and also had great grades in my science prereqs--overall GPA was lacking at 2.9 but that includes my very crappy community college general ed. Once I started working as a PCT and really loved it, I pushed myself to get As and Bs in all my sciences! Some people in my classes applied and didn't get in. One person had 34 points but got denied, another with 29 and denied. Feel so blessed I made it in!
