  1. Hello, Thank all of you for your help! I':)m definitely going to check out your ideas. If I had known what I know now, I NEVER would have changed careers. Bedside nursing is backbreaking work and nurses treat each other like ****. It is hard to go to work everyday. Keep the ideas coming and thanks again. Chris
  2. Hello everyone, I haven't been to this site in a long time, I look forward to "meeting" everyone again! I have been a floor nurse for the past three years and have grown to hate it. I am looking for ideas of other opportunities in nursing. I am an RN, but do not have a BSN or MSN. I have no other experience except the floor. I am excellent with computers and Microsoft office software (was an accountant before I became a nurse). I am willing to go back to school if the company I work for will pay for it. I live in California. I need ideas! Thank you for your help! Chris:)
  3. Hello, Yes, I am in LA. I am at Aurora Las Encinas. I started general orientation on Monday the 9th. I will start on the floor next week. Where did you get hired? Yes, let's keep in touch!
  4. Hi, Guess what? I just got hired for a psych position on the spot two days ago too! Our stories sound so similar! My nurse manager told me it was a good idea to get the med/surg experience first. Best of luck to you and let me know how it goes. Chris
  5. Hi, Cedars requires experience. I have not tried White Memorial. I'll check there. If you look at the job bulletin for NPI it always says experience needed. It also says New Grad positions are closed for Spring of 09. I'll call them again and find out the story. Thanks for your help! Chris
  6. The Semmel Institute at UCLA requires two years of experience. I don't have psych experience. Do you know where I can go that hires psych nurses without psych experience? IMHO, I would work per diem in med/surg before you make the switch. Med/surg is very demanding. Thanks! Chris
  7. Hello, How can I go from Med/Surg to psych in Los Angeles? It seems like you need experience for the psych positions. Do I need to try to find a psych training program and if so where in LA? Thanks!
  8. Hi, I am a new med/surg nurse (3 months) and need help with which dressings to use on different stages of decubs. I realize different hospitals use different products, but if I could get a general idea of what to use when it would be great. Our hospital doesn't have a "wound class" for new grads unfortunately. Is there a website I can go to that will show me pictures of the stages and what products to use for each? Thanks so much! Chris
  9. Hi, I interviewed for an OR position yesterday, and would like to know what a circulating nurse does on a day to day basis. What situations would require critical thinking (examples) and how about time management? If you could tell me more about what it is like in the OR that would be great. I asked the interviewer (unit educator) if I could "shadow" for a couple of shifts and she seemed shocked, that has me a little worried. I had a tele/gero position for six months and was miserable. I don't want to make another big mistake. Thanks! Chris
  10. Hi everyone, I need some help and advice. I am working on a Tele/Gero unit (new grad - have only been working for 4 months) and in all honesty I am in over my head. The floor is incredibly busy, the residents write alot of orders and I can't keep up. Just trying to pass meds on time is a nightmare with the gero patients. Here's my question: I have an interview for psych position on Wednesday. What do I say when she asks why I want to leave? I can't say too busy!, Can't say I can't stand gero patients, can't say I am overwhelmed and can't keep up! What can I say or should I be honest? I have a few good things I can say. I seem to be able to deal with difficult patients well (the ones that during report I am told they are a pain in the a**). They don't give me any problems. I also seem to have a knack for getting orders from difficult doctors. Please help! Thanks, Marie
  11. I know exactly how you feel! I also work on a cardiac unit and I hate every second of it. Every day I have to fight to keep from quitting. I am so stressed out and have lost all confidence and self-esteem. To make things worse, I ended up making a mistake today - I infused blood a little too fast on a fluid overloaded patient and they sent me home - I am assuming of course that I will be fired.
  12. As far as I know, juvenile records are sealed. You could check with your local legal aid office.
  13. help people to not have to work five days a week. to not have fifteen e-mails from fifteen different people about something you have already taken care of but they can't find where they put your work to not have files waiting on my desk that five different people want done five different ways to not sit at a computer all day to make more money to get paid based on seniority rather than have a manager that gives raises to her favorites need I go on?
  14. Accountant. If I were you I would take that month off. You will be glad you did, once nursing school starts you'll be reading 400-500 pages a week! Chris
  15. Hi, I volunteer in an ER while going to nursing school and all the nurses tell me not to come directly to the ER. They told me new grads usually don't make it and end up going up to one of the floors. But the good news is, they say if you work in an ICU (I was told the Cardio-Thoracic ICU at my hospital has an excellent new grad program) you will learn ALOT and will transition better to the ER. That is what I am going to do after graduation. Good luck! Chris
  16. Yes, I got an A in Chem. Had a fabulous professor. It is possible. What are you having problems with? Chris
  17. I'm 46 and in my first year of nursing school, after being an accountant for 25 years. Very happy I decided to do this.
  18. Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I am now working full time and going to nursing school in a night/weekend program. It is hard, but I am happier than I have been for a long time. It is so nice to be happy again. Go for it...you have nothing to lose. Chris
  19. Hi, I have done exactly what you are contemplating doing. After being an accountant at a major corporation for 25 years, I had also had enough. I am now in my first year of nursing school and I love it. I am very glad I decided to go this route. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
  20. Thanks for the info.
  21. Hi everyone, Could those of you who are already nurses please clarify something for me? Can we use calculators for the drug calculations for boards? I am hearing different things from different people. Thanks for your help. Chris
  22. I decided to become a nurse after volunteering in an ER for three years. After seeing the nurses in action, I decided to become one. I want to help people. I also like the three day a week schedule, the only work clothes you need are scrubs, and that you never take work home.
