  1. I would take Clements for 500, I had him for a forensics class once. I think I had Swartzwelder for ethics. Good luck!
  2. I have a year left and love it. The first year is all MSN basics, 2nd year things like patho and pharm, third and final year clinical courses. There are only 2 on campus visits for us and both are a Tuesday-Thursday in Philly. They include lectures and patient simulation. I was living in DC but now I fly in from CO. They give you all the info on nearby hotels. Good luck!
  3. I was worried about this so I emailed Dr. Tucker a few months ago and she told me it wasn't mandatory until the 2nd year. "The core courses during the first year do not require synchronous lectures. During the second year (and clinical courses) the courses will require a weekly, live synchronous session that is held in the evening. " I hope thats still the case so I don't have to mess with my schedule. I'm still not registered though so I can't see anything yet.
  4. You mean share the hotel I picked? I was looking at the Sheraton or Penn Inn, but I guess I need to make sure I know which campus it'll be on first. We have a few years to worry about that though.
  5. Do you have to come to campus at all before the year you start clinicals? I have a hotel all picked out near campus for when the time comes =)
  6. They told me the same thing but oh well guess they were kidding lol.
  7. I applied back in November, and they said I wouldn't hear anything until May or June, but I heard from them March 7th.
  8. Ya I saw that, I thought the same thing about studying! Maybe we'll get lucky like Irishizrn and not have to take it. I noticed it said you should take physiology as an elective if you don't do well on the test. So how do yo like the program so far? Do we contact our advisor this summer or will they contact us?
  9. I'm the same way. Currently I'm thinking omg I can't do that! But after a few years I sure we'll all feel more confident. I had my "moment" last summer when I was at work....I'm like omg I have to go back to school I can't be doing this forever lol. I was a little surprised that the degree plan doesn't have us doing any science until the 2nd year but either way I'm ready to start!
  10. Hi everyone, I couldn't find a thread for Drexel FNP fall 2014 so I figured I would start one so we can all meet/chat ahead of time. I'm currently living in the DC area and I'm excited to be visiting Philly a few times a year. Anyone else out there find out yet?
  11. Hey Crux1024, congrats! Looks like we'll be suffering together! I'm also nervous as hell, but hopefully by the time clinicals start we'll feel a little more prepared. As far as admissions go, I applied in November and they said I wouldn't hear until May so I was happy to hear this soon. I had just been rejected from GW so it was great timing.
  12. Hi there, I just found out last Sunday I got into Drexel for fall 2014 FNP. I've read a lot of good things about the program so far. I like the idea of campus visits so you can still connect with classmates but not sit in class every week. Anyone else out there in this class? Good luck to everyone too!
  13. Wow you just perfectly described my job as well. I think that's most of my friends also. I can identify with all of that except the charge nursing. I interviewed for a spot already, but the only problem is that I wasn't aware that starting in the middle of the school year contract causes you to make less, and I might not be able to swing it until August. I already made peace with the amount I would be making, but I don't know how much lower I can go. Thanks for the response!
  14. Try it now if you want specifics, I had to jump through hoops to reactivate my account. This was harder than making changes to my bank account haha! As far as the schools go they're going to have the same curriculum, but I've heard UT Houston has a summer semester which I did not like. Some of the teachers are even the same, at least for patho. Once you graduate and start working it won't matter where you went because no nursing school can really teach you what you'll need to know, that's why getting a summer job is so important. I worked in an ER the summer before I graduated and I got more out of clinicals that last semester because of it. I'm not saying you don't learn anything in clinicals, but it's much different and they treat you different when you're done with school and working. Good luck choosing, in the long run it won't matter. TWU's tuition might still be cheaper though, I talked to a UTH student while in school and she was complaining that the cost went up. I can't recall any UTH coworkers either, mostly TWU, UT Austin, PVAM, and community colleges.
  15. Hello, I am an MICU nurse in Texas. I have 2 years tele exp and 8 months now in MICU. I find that MICU is very physically and emotionally draining and I occasionally get depressed when thinking about work. Dealing with death and grieving families on a daily basis is very hard for me. I have always wanted to be a school nurse but haven't been able to afford the paycut, now my situation has changed and I'm seriously considering it. My question to all you school nurses is do you ever feel like you miss the rush of caring for critical patients? I know school nurses are very busy and it can also be emotional and physical, but I've never heard a school nurse say they were unhappy with their job. Also, tell me about some times when you did have critical situations, had to use CPR/AED? Thanks
  16. Congrats guys! I graduated from TWU Houston in 2006 and now work in MICU. It was hard but I enjoyed it and I made some of my best friends there. Enjoy the new building, the old one had one woman's room per floor and the lines were crazy! Nursing tests are different, you're used to A+B = C always. In nursing school there is always more than one answer, the test questions are always "What would the nurse do first" and the answer is almost never "Call the Dr." Good Luck!
  17. I have 2 years of tele and went straight to MICU. My mgr thought tele exp is better than the regular floor. I think it's easier to learn the different illnesses you've never encountered before rather than come into an ICU not knowing how to read strips. Tele patient's tend to be more sick anyway so again I think it's better experience for you than the floor. Good luck
  18. I guess what we mean is that in the U.S nurses dont make as much money as they're worth. Someone mentioned before that garbagemen make more than many nurses at $35/hr. After hearing what nurses in the Philippines make no one can complain that much. But yes, nurses over here make decent money and have wonderful job security.
  19. I imagine I would be very annoyed too if all my classmates ONLY talked about money all the time. I guess I'm lucky...most of my friends in nursing school and I always talk non-stop about what type of nursing we want to do, not how much money we'll make. I do think about the money though, I use it as motivation to study when I can't make myself read anymore. I used to work at a computer store when I was taking pre-reqs in Austin, TX, and I cant tell you how many guys I worked with that had engineering degrees from UT Austin and were still working retail b/c they couldnt find jobs! So knowing that I'll have a job when I'm done and that I'll finally be able to live comfortably is part of my motivation to study...but I've always known I wanted to be a nurse since before I realized how much nurses make..and ESPECIALLY how much a nurse does..because to be honest I had no idea before I got into school. To all those that want easy money...play the lottery...b/c I dont think good nurses ever make what they're worth.
  20. Hello, as listed above, once you begin a BSN program you will take Patho and Pharm in your first semester, and after that its all nursing courses. However, I've found that for the first time since I began college..I'm actually using these core classes..never thought I'd say that! You are always using your assesment skills, once in an Acute care class you go deeper into the things your learned in patho, and pharm never goes away. I like it b/c I'm actually using the biology knowledge in the real world, I'm not just memorizing info only to forget it the next semester. Hope all goes well for you.
  21. I find it difficult to study as well, I live directly across the street from the astrodome in houston, tx, and the helicopters flying back and forth alll last night just kept me awake thinking about all those people over there. I cant really donate money, but luckily since im in houston i can donate my time. Once i get the schedules from my friends at school i may volunteer for a few hours at a red cross shelter this weekend near where i work. I can help ppl and sharpen my assessment skills at the same time. you guys are right though, donate blood now and on a regular basis, as well as anything material you can. I hear theyre in need of shoes in particular. Good luck studying and just keep praying. im about to turn the tv off and read...wish me luck.
  22. Like everyone else said, its much like intro to psych, youll learn freud and erikson again, remember that stuff....theyll teach it to you 2 more times once youre already in nursing school...and by then youll be so happy to see it b/c they'll be the easy questions on the test! Good luck.
  23. Hey there, well Im into my second semester of nursing school now so I dont know everything about specializing, but from what my instructors have said you just get a general nursing degree (B.S), pass state boards, then get your job of your choice. Everyone goes thorugh the same classes and clinicals to pass the boards, and I've heard some offer electives of your choice. What you should look into are hospital internships for new grads or nurses wanting to change their specialty. The hospital will hire you as a nurse, but you'll go through the (paid) internship for your specialty for 6+ months, then youre ready to go. They also have summer internships you can get as a student nurse once you have at least one year of nursing school done. For example, I want to go into the OR, but I wont get specific OR training until I get hired on as an intern. Good luck with school.
  24. Hey there, just know that youre not alone in the race to get into nursing school! I was dealing with the same things you are last year, and luckily I got accepted into a BSN program this past Janurary, except I'm not pregnant and I cant even imagine going through all this if I was..so you have my respect! I'm also in Houston and I know how competative it is. Have you looked at Texas Woman's University? Many ppl don't even know its there and just look at the bigger schools like UT Houston and UTMB. My gpa was great but not near a 3.9-4.0 like most people, I got waitlisted for fall 2004 and got in spring 2005, getting into any school for the spring is a bit easier. I've talked to many RNs in our BSN program and they all say they're glad they got their ADN, but that they wished they went straight for BSN. Tuition is also cheaper than you might think, the last 2 semester including books have been $3000 or less. They also have many student loans specifically for nursing students you can look into (im in debt but I'll have that job waiting for me when I'm done next year!!) Anyway, you will get done one way or another and do whats best for you, Good Luck!
  25. I can imagine it must be frustrating working with people that make it obvious they do not like their job. I know that if I did go to med/surg I would try to learn as much as possible, and I always try to stay as positive as I can. I just think I would feel bad going into the job knowing that I want to leave within a year, and helping out with the shortage only to leave very soon, however, if the experience gained is that significant it might be worth the time. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter!
