  1. Being I also am a peace officer right now by law I cannot refuse mandatory overtime.I would be insubordinate and can be terminated and if the state wanted to push it could also be fined.but since we have SB1027 going through the senate in California I am addressing this through our union and nursing board.and am being told if the bill passes there is a good chance it will apply to us and we could file a law suit with the state if they try to deny us.but of course its a battle.I am being told by our union lobbiest that most states will probley have their bill passed individualy before the congress gets it passed that their taking their sweet time with it and there is strong lobbing against it in washington.so I would wright or fax is even better your us senators (not your local ones unless your lobbing for your state bill) and tell them to get off their butts and get it through. In california it is Diane Feinstein who will have a say so.I have written and faxed her twice with no response as of yet.
  2. Big issue where I work but per your licening board here in california the answer is no.but we pass meds to someimes 3-400 inmates in 2 hours our question is how are we to do it then?No one has given us a answer yet.
  3. My Daughter is in her third year in college and before she went I told her under no circumstance do I want her to get into the medical field.Lucky for me she listened to me for once. The options and oppurtunities she will have and have already been offered is something nurses dont get with much more money. And as far as nursing being a calling that don't help yor kids when your working alot of 16 hours and holidays. And cant give a part of yourself back to them because your to tired all the time so not only would I tell someone no but h--- no.
  4. Enough is enough lets all get along. I know I am a good nurse and it doesnt take someone else to tell me otherwise. We all need each other as nurses and I dont care how long anyone has been in school as I have said before it just means its something you have wanted to do for yourself hopefully not to make you think you are better than someone else.I know people that have spent a large portion of their lives in college and cant get a decent job.Its who you are as a person and what you bring to the job. SO LETS ALL GET ALONG!

True Story: about 15 years ago I worked in a Catholic hospital. This women was fine at lunch time and approx 1 hour before the Supervising nurse had changed her IV. I was charting on a post-op when one of the nuns came up to me and stated honey the woman in room 15 is cold and needs a blanket. well when I went to give her the blanket she had been gone not to long after the Sup. RN had been in there. But the MD wanted a full code which we did for about 20 minutes. after wards the nun came up to me and wanted to make sure I had given her the blanket.
  11. We have a nurse at work that after being there about 4 years can't work weekends due to her religion. and of course she also has multiple sabbath days also.Don't most religions exclude medical from their weekend sabbaths? just curious
  12. What is interesting is most nurses dont complain about their patients but other co-workers and management. It seems as a whole if we treated each other alot better we would all be alot happier in our profession.Tomorrow I think I'll make it a point to go out of my way to try to help one co-worker having problems(I work a 12 tomorrow so I'll have alot of time to accomplish this mission)
  13. bend over as far as possible so we can check you out better.
  14. Nurse to patient ratio is a big issue I feel. You dont know some days if you did your best because your to busy trying to stay afloat.I would like to see states get very involved in step-up programs for nurses,in fact I'm a big advocate in this area, because time and money is a big issue in nursing education.I think insurances should have to give a certain % to these programs.Vacation and retirement plans should also be a mandatory basis of employment. And the hospitals that say they cant afford it I see very few that cant.Team nursing is a must.Hospitals have gone from it and wished they never did that. But honestly I work in a prison and our issues to a certain point are a little diffrent.
  15. I think I would demand a meeting with the supervisors and co-workers to be in the same area at the same time and discuss the importence of team nursing and open communication.I also would state that I would be putting this in wrightng to the hospital administer also or hospital corperation.I would almost bet this type of behavior would immediatly stop.
  16. I go out on recruitment a couple times a year.and the feed back alot of times we get is if their going to put their blood and sweat(not counting the cost)in for 4 years why not do something else that gets them more pay, more benifits, and more time off for theirselves?A lot of students are taking up business and computor classes. My daughter is in college and we have this conversation all the time. Most politicians dont even give nurses the credit they should have. But one good thing is there will always be a job there if you need it even in the toughest of times we need nurses.

Just for fun and to lighten things up a bit what would evryones dream job in nursing be?If you could work anywhere and under what circumstance would you be happiest?Personally mine would be somewhere I could see the ocean once in awhile making 5-6000 a month full benifits and at the most 3-5 patients(of course they all coorperate)I dont care about weekends all the time but once in awhile wouldnt be bad and a holiday also.I think I could live with that.
  18. WOW it seems in the last 2 weeks I have seen a increase of LPN VS RN going back and forth for what reason? When it gets down to it there is no reason that we can't move foreward and get pass all this. There are nurses that are starting to get real tired of it. I really hope everyone gets along a lot better than this at their work place otherwise I'm not sure how you function 100%.For some reason I don't have all these problems where I work except for the inmates but we as staff work as a team.
  19. In the last couple of days I have notice several post where nurses seem to be putting other nurses down or going on and on about their License. What happen to professionalism? When people do not want to be here due to the fighting maybe people need to tone it down and attempt to get along better. How about a little positive encouragement about all the wonderful things our career does fullfill?I'm the first to agree there are some major problems but I make a point every week to do something towards attempting to make it better for myself and others. (this week I wrote Senator Kuel concerning bills being addressed)Monday a friend and myelf are actually going to sacramento concerning another issue.Nurses are some of the best people in the world and we all know we are needed no matter who and what license you have so please can't we at least try to get along?
  20. why dont unstead of us wondering who does what and all the stuff that has been posted lately we all work on the fact several bills are getting ready to go before the senate that will effect EVERYONE,I repeat EVERYONE! so please lets move on and spend all our energy no matter what type of license you have and get involved before it is to late!

I am really thankful that most of the RNS I work with do not think like wesley. What happen to team work?My classification concerns the same work for LVNS and RNS and we both work well togeather. I make 4600 a month with full benifits and retirement. The best part is my patients are glad I'm there so what it gets down to I really don't care what wesley thinks because I know I get the job done and support my family very well.
  22. Well one advantage I can say is with my nursing license we also are also peace officers and are under their union at this time (which prison advocates are trying to get us out) but anyways one thing I have learned by being in their union most nursing unions suck and really are not as strong as they present theirselves usally. As unhappy as a large % of nurses are it amazes me how unstrong we really are a whole. Why do we not have a nation wide union with all CNAS/LVN/LPN/ALL RNs in it as a whole with lets say 60 dollars a month fee.(worth some large union-corp to take on)I also have to say yes as nurses we should be patient advocates but unless you take care of yourself first major burnout it around the bend. And yes I found out several years ago not to be killing myself for the so called good of the profession, very few people really appreciate what nurses do for our society including our goverment. I told my daughter never, never get into the medical feild for the time you spend in school you can make twice the amount in something else and have weekends, holidays and full benifits with half the stress.
  23. I work in a max prison so confidentiality is a real political issue right now especially since alot of inmates we deal with do alot of gassings(throw urine, feces, blood on staff)Basically I tell the staff that you treat all of them as if they were positive and use universal precautions at all times. But the inmates have the same rights as a patients in the hospital in that the staff has no right to their medical history. But what is scary is over 52% of inmates randamaly tested have shown positive for hepititis c.
  24. Marin county cost quite abit to live in but there quite a few nursing jobs open.I wish you the best of luck. I work for corrections in central california presently but I have friends that work in the bay area.
