clearwater, fl school?
This may be helpful to the OP. It's a link to the Florida Board of Nursing NCLEX passing rates for all the nursing programs in Florida, by school. The school would have to be on this list. http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing/NCLEX_2003_%202004.pdf ETA: I noticed that the results for University of Tampa (also a private school) are not listed here. Hmmm...

Is there away around the nursing school waiting list?
Hi there! I called USF's nursing program a few weeks ago asking some of these same questions and I'll share what they told me. First, they DO have an accelereated BSN program for those holding a Bachelor's in an unrelated field. Beware though, as these programs are ineligible for some of the financial aid available to the traditional RN programs. You CAN take their tradition RN program as a Junior transfer, as long as you have completed the prerequisites. Here is a link to their program offerings: http://hsc.usf.edu/nocms/nursing/Programs_of_Study.html As far as prerequisites go: USF does NOT have a age limit on the previous credits. Nor does Hillsborough County's ASN program. However, Polk County's CC's ASN nursing program DOES require all the science prereq's be under 5 or 7 years old (can't remember which). Something to think about. USF told me they had NO waiting list...however, that the average GPA for those who WERE accepted this fall was 3.5!!! :uhoh21: Their minimum requirement is 3.0, though. Another resource I thought I'd share was the Florida Board of Nursing's NCLEX Passing Rates by school. Although I had also heard good things about Florida Hospital of Health Sciences, its percentage of students who passed the exam for last year was only 80.7%. (For perspective, USF's pass rate was 96.5%). That is not the only aspect to look at of course, but it is pretty compelling. Here is the webpage if you are interested: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing/NCLEX_2003_%202004.pdf Best of luck to you. I will be applying for Summer 2006 myself! Michelle

Arrival in US -- what to expect, what to do
Hello, you are not an inconvenience at all! Your daycare rate will range anywhere from approximately $100 to $150 a week, depending on whether your child is in a private care situation or in a preschool sort of facility. Of course, the latter may be more difficult for you with a nurse's working hours! Do you already know where you are going to be working? The reason I ask is that St. Petersburg is a HUGE metropolitan area, and I strongly advise finding a home and daycare provider close to your employer if possible because traffic here in the Tampa/St. Pete area is really extraordinarily bad due to so few Interstate roads (the state itself is a peninsula and then Pinellas county is one itself!) If your future employer does not have daycare referral (many here do) then you may want to check this out: http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/childcare. This is our state licensing board's site and tells you everything you need to know about daycare here. The provider search function is here: http://199.250.30.131/childcare/provider/providersearch.aspx This search is neat because it allows to search for providers who work non-standard hours When I was in real estate, I used to have these links on my website and people really loved them. Again, feel free to PM if you have any other questions. Good luck with your move...most people really like it here. Best regards, Michelle

Arrival in US -- what to expect, what to do
Hi there! I used to work in St. Pete (husband still does) but live in neighboring Hillsborough. This site is pertinent to St. Petersburg, which is in Pinellas County: http://www.pinellascounty.org This has information on area beaches and parks, links to utility services, links to sex offender databases, etc. A helpful site for all Floridians is http://www.myflorida.com Here you can find out where the nearest license plate "tag office" is, where to get your FL driver's license, etc. You can also find links at this site to the state licensing board here. The local paper is found completely online here: http://www.sptimes.com and you can find rentals and jobs as well. PM me if you need any further information about the area or FL in general. Best regards, Michelle

Meg, I sure hope this does the trick for you. How long does he think you'll need to have the drain? Is the pain manageable for you? Keep us posted. Best wishes, Michelle

Flea Control during pregnancy?!
Both our 2 cats and 2 dogs had fleas terribly the first year we moved to Florida. They were all over our house too! Advantage kicks them out and you don't have to treat your home. They all die within about 3 days without a hospitable animal to host them. You have to use it monthly down here but trust me, it is worth it. Check out http://www.nofleas.com and you can get a free trial package. Best of luck, Michelle

whats your day like?
I appreciate all of you taking the time to write all this down. As a NS hopeful for next summer, I really have benefited from hearing how each of you spends your days. Please, if anyone else wouldn't mind sharing their day, we haven't heard from L&D or hospice or many other areas of nursing

How old are you?
I am 39 years old and started back today! :w00t: I am married with two children, 18 and 16. By the time I graduate with my BSN I will probably be about 41. I figure better late than never. Michelle

I've prayed for you Meg and I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. Best wishes, Michelle

How should I handle this situation?
If I were her manager, I would want to know how badly she treated this patient. Nurses have made complaints about other nurses on this BB before, but usually the complainant did not actually witness what transpired. Since you did, you have first hand knowledge and I believe a duty to report this woman's behavior. To my mind, there is no excuse for her behavior. I really feel for your friend. Best wishes, Michelle
