  1. Hospice nurses just give morphine, sit back, and watch.
  2. It's tough but it's totally doable. I work 30+ hrs a week and did just fine. Also, I had classmates with babies/small kids. You will definitely need to get your time management skills down but you'll need that when you're a nurse, too. Learn it now. as far as your boyfriend goes, still see him. You will absolutely need some time away of nursing school for you! Enjoy your date night. Make it fun and stress free. yes, it's a lot of work and it's time consuming but it was also a blast and you'll make lifelong friends. Congratulations and good luck!
  3. I was in a VERY similar situation. Was nervous a heck to start at my age (37). Closed my eyes, jumped in, and did it anyway. LOVED IT!!! I was far from th oldest in my class (oldest was 65) and I got along great with all of my classmates (ages ranged from 20-65). You'll do fine. Pick the program that's right for you and go for it! If you're 40 (or whatever age when you finish) at least you'll be finished. You're going to turn 40 at some point anyway! Congrats and good luck. I'm truly happy for you.
  4. Just started out as a hospice nurse and I absolutely love it. I can absolutely see myself doing this for many years. Just thought I'd share my enthusiasm.
  5. I know I HATED hearing this when I was a student but I'm going to say it anyway- med/surg was a great way to "find myself", develop my nursing and time management skills, and hone in the nursing instincts. Don't rule out med/surg!!!
  6. I suppose stress is relative, but I've found that hospice nursing is the lowest stress environment that I've worked in (I've done Med/surg, MICU, NICU, Psych). Sure, there are good days and bad and then there is the necessary evil of paperwork and charting, but the work itself is amazing and I feel everyday that I provided excellent nursing care and made a difference. Most of the patients and families are greatly appreciative of everything I do. You'll find your niche and a job that you love!
  7. Good luck to everyone about to start. I'm about to begin my final semester of the day program. I love everything about this program and am so thankful that I'm a part of it. The classes are tough but the faculty and the clinical experiences are amazing. Keep in close contact with your instructors and take their advice, as they want you to succeed. Also, if you begin to decline in your success, go to the instructor EARLY. There are resources that can help you. Do it early, though- I've never heard of extra credit and a 75.9 is failing. Also, get involved! SNA and SGA are great ways to do so. Get to know your classmates. They are fighting similar battles as you and can be a great source of strength, support, and motiVation. Go to class, check your email, and be on time! A great deal of information is given during every lecture. While there are a few boring lectures, most of them are fascinating. Many of the instructors give imperative and crucial information through email. Check it often! (There is an app for the email you can get on your smart phone). Be on time! Instructors can listen can the door at the beginning of class. Any information you miss or quizzes you miss are gone. Be on time at clinical. It's embarrassing for you and the program if you're late. Also, your instructor can fail you for being late more than once! Just set get in the habit of being on time. It absolutely MUST happen when you get a job as a nurse, begin the habit now. Again, good luck. This is a wild ride but soooo worth it! -Clint
  8. Sorry I missed this. I don't have kids, so I'm not sure how everyone does it. I know a lot leave them with spouse/grandparents.
  9. In Foundations, lecture is in Tues and Wed. Clinicals are on Thurs and Frid. In Commons (your second class) Clinicals are on Tues and awed and Lecture is on Thurs and Friday. Complex (third class) Lecture is on Monday, Thurs, Frid with Clinicals on Tues and Wed.
  10. Foundations, your very first class, will start at 0800. Most of the other classes will start at 0900. This is for lecture only. Clinicals begin at 0630.
  11. I'm finishing up my first semester. If I recall correctly, it's not long after the deadline that they send out the emails. Good luck! This program is intense but it is great. Seriously, going to nursing school and BSHP was the best decision I've ever made in my life.
  12. Thanks for the advice! I'm starting in Jan. Days
  13. I took them at the same time during the summer. Both require intense studying and homework but it's doable.
