  1. I'm an L&D RN, been a nurse for 12 years, and I'm seriously looking for my first travel assignment. I've been working PRN two nights a week for the past couple of years and I homeschool my kids. My S.O. has a 90-mile commute (one way) to work five days a week and it's bleeding him dry (physically, not to mention gas and wear and tear on the car). He has put in his notice at work, and he and the kids are coming with me. I know that I will be able to make enough money for all of us, but I think he would feel better if he could contribute a little bit financially. I'm looking for ideas on ways he can make money while on the road. We'll have our laptop and internet whereever we go. He'll still need to be home to watch the kids while I'm working, so a work-at-home thing would be best. He's thought about selling on Ebay, but the problem with that is that we won't have room for him to store the things he's selling. Any other ideas? His background is in IT, but he's a smart guy and can learn just about anything. A small business would be ideal, rather than working for someone else. Jennifer in NC
  2. Yes!!!! I couldn't have said it better myself. :)
  3. I refused the vax for my kids also. Knowing that chicken pox is a whole lot harder on adults than on kids, I didn't like the thought that they would avoid chicken pox throughtout childhood, then get extremely sick with it when they were adults. And, like you said, it's not foolproof anyway.
  4. I think it is wonderful that you dare to question. When my first two children were born, they didn't give Hep B to babies. The oldest one got it when he went to 6th grade. I managed to survive until the age of 25 without getting Hep B vaxxed, and that's when I became a nurse and got it at the hospital I went to work for. The answer of "blood transfusions" was not enough for me...My third child did not get vaxxed at birth, I refused. I did finally agree to it when he got his 4/5 year-old shots. Re: "A handful of children get Hep-B for no apparent reason" (I'm quoting from memory here) , just as a handful of children have life-threatening side effects from the vaccination each year.
  5. I don't think it's about "potty training" them. I think it's about being in touch with your baby's needs at all times. I have several friends who practice elimination communication (EC for short) and they swear by it, although I just don't have the patience (plus I work outside the home). Yes, I suppose I hang out with a bunch of hippies....but I have heard of things ALOT weirder than this. "Weird" is relative anyway. Trying thinking "outside the box" a little more and these things will start to make perfect sense.
  6. I am thinking of traveling with children also. I have alot of good ideas, but putting them into action is the problem! School is the least of my worries...I homeschool mine. It is not as hard as people think...when kids can learn in their own environment and at their own pace, and follow their interests, they soak up knowledge like little sponges. As for child care...you could hire a nanny to go with you, or you can try to arrange a nanny or in-home babysitter in Charlotte before you accept an assignment there. This is going to be the hard part, for me anyway...I am so picky about who takes care of my children when I'm gone. Or....let the kids stay in NY with your husband, and let him find child care there. HTH, Jennifer
  7. Hi all! I'm thinking of taking a travel assignment this fall. I have two little boys, ages 4 and 7. I homeschool them, so school is not a problem. I just wonder, can I expect help from the agency in finding child care, such as referrals to nanny agencies etc.? Has anyone else been successful with traveling as a single parent with their kids? Also, I'd appreciate if anyone is working with a truly exceptional agency can PM me and let me know who they work with and what their benefits are. I definitely need free private housing, two bedrooms would be ideal. I need to take my dog also. I would like utilities to be paid by the agency, and pots, pans, linens, furniture, TV, etc to be included. If I end up traveling across the country (I live in NC), free airfare and rental car would be nice. Does anybody work with an agency that provides all this? Thanks in advance. Jennifer
  8. Do you mind telling me too? :)
  9. Yes, we are still using it. As a matter of fact, it's the ONLY cervical ripening agent we use. We also have a high c-section rate. It's evil stuff. I hate it.
  10. I am on an email list for recovering nurses with that author. She is a wonderful person. I have procrastinated on reading the book, but I think I'll do so now :) Thanks for the review!
