  1. Ive recieved a few PMs about WHERE in CT I work, and the pay (depending on WHAT you want to do) can range from low 20s to 30+ an hr. and THIS IS in Hartford County. but basically the whole state has these competative pay rates, one simply has to look for them. my wife (again) makes 30 plus as charge nurse for REHAB, 32 hr a week, full benes. My daughter rakes in close to a grand a week working for the county VNA as Pshych. nurse, ALL she does is drive to pts homes and administer meds and chart, ect. I do POOL or AGENCy work, I choose my jobs and can yield up to around 35.00 hr, depending, but I add we ALL work 2nd shifts. ( base is 32 an hr but some pools pay more). Pools do offer benes too. Hope this answers some the questions as to "where in ct", ect. EDIT TO ADD: I know it. In NY state, many nurses both RB and LPN come over to work here on WEEKENDs. A few agencys offer 2 8hr shifts @ a high rate pay, BUT this is for sat and sundays, they pay for a matel, assign you to a facitliy for the 4 shifts, as I say pay for lodging and some for food, but the PAY rate is higher, and we have a LOT nurses every weekend doing this. I wanted to add this for the post below and for any others who may be able to benefit? I have yet to meet ONE who "didnt enjoy this".. most the shifts tho are LTC facilities. Hope THIS helps, if interested pull up http://www.courant.com ( hartford courant newspaper) and check the ads out, I honestly havent looked in a while cuz I have all the assignments I want and can handle,, I have been doing hths for over 15 yrs,and the agency knows what MY needs are and are good about assignments, and one can deny an assignemnt if they choose,, a win, win sitaution,, IF you like LTC. I never would settle for these LOW pay rates, PERSONALLY. Much luck to all.
  2. Congrads! i remember when I was waiting and got the news! i had been sure I failed but didnt and celebrated by getting a great nurse job @ state vets hospital. What a good feeling, enjoy! IMO.
  3. No. Of course NOT. what one does away from the workplace is a coonstitutional right. it should NOT at all matter one bit unless the nurse IS proven dangerous and or has been arrested FoR such behavior.. my word, how far will these (some) questions go? It is (here anyhow) still the USa and we have a constitution to protect these rights. IMO
  4. Yes. If it were myself I sure would take that class and the LPN when they let you. There is a lot to learn and you can start w/the PCT, and is sorta what I did some 20 years ago,and it helped. Hope this helps you. IMo
  5. Why online? I mean you can go to a small school, for less,,take less time and get an Rn, or easier, go to the state LPN school. Some states are free, and it isnt too long, here in ct they have night and day classes for those who can only go in, in the day OR nights. But I assume there are online schools, but I personally think they r scams, or are VERY costly. good luck. IMO
  6. No. they should NOT make her 'cut her hair". As pointed out there are many alternatives to CUTTING it. It is HER hair and Id think this school woulda tell her IF she had to cut it,and as far as I know, nursing schools do NOT MAKE one cut their hair. but they CAN ask her to put it up, wash it, groom herself so she looks presentable and make sure she is clean, but I think THAT IS as far as they can go, unless she doesnt conform to their standards, in which case she'd be rejected, so the choice would be hers. I am a MALE nurse,, for 20 plus yrs and had long hair back when I went to nurse school, and tho they didnt 'like it", they couldnt 'make" me cut it, but I did tie it up! I stiil have it and simply tie it up! IMO
  7. I live in CT and the going rate here is around 25.00 to 35 or more, depending on WhAT type nursing job you take, and trust me, one can CHOOSE which they want. This is in nursing homes LTC, and rehab units. my daughter is LPN and does work for the local visiting nurses PSHYC, and all she really does is drive to pts homes and pass meds and assess the pt as far as mentations. she tells me she takes in like 30-50 dollars an hr, depending on the day, : holidays, weekends ect, and with 3 kids and a lazy husband SHE supports ALl 5 of them easily, so an LPN CAN do VERY WELL. My wife is an LPN as well and works rehab, at a local health care facility, and draws 30.08 an hr. I do pool nursing and pull between 30-50 PLUS an hr, again depending on what day, I choose to work. Granted I have been an LPN for many years buy here in CT it seems we have a decent rate of pay, I see the 11 dollars an hr and wonder WHY you doing this for that low sum? One can at least double that here in CT, and WE NEED nurses. IMO.
  8. I went to LPN school in the 80s and it was a state run program and was FREE, save the books and uniforms. My daughter went to the same program 10 yrs later and it was around 2 grand? I was puzzled, cuz with the shortage of nurses, WHY is the state charging to GET new nurses. the program was hard enough w/o having to PAY. I am glad I did it WHEN I did, but feel badly for others NOW, cuz these (used to be free) programs are costly now? I see no reason why, and it sure does cut into getting and keeping new and good nurses. IMo
  9. In these situations, where "panic attacks" disable one, it IS necessary usually to get some THERAPY along with ANY antidepressent medication, oR antianxiety meds. Pills in themselves are NOT designed to be used to take as an everyday "cure" for depression OR anxiety, some real psychotherapy should be combined with the drug, to ALLOW the drug to allow you to open up and face what the problem really is, :IE, lets say you are anxious as your schooling is intense, ok? Now you start taking a med for this condition, yet after the said 5 days, you are 'clenching your jaw", ect,, SIDE effects indeed, idiosyncratic Id think, non the less they are present. you wonder 'if the med is working"? Then you ARE really distracted from your nursing,no? So best to tackle the anxiety, than to be "anxious" and when anxious, one usually is not too focused on nursing, IMO. So talking these problems out IS a common sense and best thing to do, IMO. If in therapy, the therapist would be able to HELP you in an appropiate manner, so you could take the med, but work out the problem. As it seems NOW, you only take the pills, no? Antidepressents were suposed to make one more comfortable So YOU CAN emote to a place where your anxiety lies, and if this is accomplished, with a trained therapist, this anxiety source can be dealt with in a constructive manner and you maybe wont need drugs. Then one CAN recognize the source and tackle it. I've always postulated, if one is taking a pshych med, they should get the other half of the treatment, PSYCHOTHERAPY. It helped many I know, but ANy pt or person I know who has taken any SSRI (esp meds w/o psychotherapy), well the med ALONE never helped. It takes a combo of meds AND psychotherapy, to really focus in to get to, and help that problem to remit. As far as ATIVAn, IF it helps, fine, but same deal here, I'd suggest more insight into WHY you suddenly aquired 'panic attacks". Be wise and stay healthy, get the missing half of the therapy, meds and psychotherapy HELP a lot, where PILLS on their own usually make the problem worse? And do NOT give up on your nursing career, it IS worth it. And a healthy nurse is a happy and productive nurse. be well. I still recall my first nursing teacher who always said,"nursing arts are only SKILLS with COMMON SENSE". I find those words some 20 plus yrs later, WISE indeed. IMO EDIT TO ADD: I have to add I agree with the post below this. It could be something so simple it was overlooked? I would certainly be tested before Id take ANY drug for this problem,, IMO
