I have my BSN. Working on my OCN. I want to become an oncology NP. How do I get there? & can I do it online? Thanks!

Thanks so much for you reply! I've actually already turned down two jobs at cancer centers...they didn't feel right to me. So I am being picky about my 2nd job bc i do want to stay somewhere a long time. As for being charge & precepting...these are things I've already done due to nursing shortage on my floot...i didn't feel quite ready but I stepped up to the plate.

So yesterday was one year I have worked on a med/surg/oncology floor. We mostly get surgical pts & some medical...& occasionally a cancer pt here & there. My ultimate goal is to be an oncology nurse. I got my chemo certification a few months ago & have yet to hang chemo on my floor...that's how often we get a cancer pt. Now that I've worked a year, I'm looking else where for another job. One that's more focused on oncology. Does anyone think that it's too soon to quit? I'm dreading putting in my 2 weeks just bc we've already had over 7 nurses quit just in the year I've worked, & I know my supervisor would not be happy...

I ended up turning the job down. I was too conflicted about the 80 mi round trip 5x a week, & in my interview was told I would be mixing my chemo as well which made me uncomfortable. Since then turned down another oncology clinic job due to they were looking for a one-woman show. Right now I'm in the process of getting a job at another, bigger hospital on their oncology floor where I would be working mostly with oncology pts versus now where I work with mostly med/surg pts. Hope this all works out! Thanks for your advice :)

If you're wanting to do oncology, I suggest getting your chemo certification soon. After I graduated, I got my ACLS & then chemo. Good Luck! I wanted to do oncology too right out of college. I think it's the best field!

The class is all online and takes at most a month. You can go at your own pace. Some finish sooner if they're renewing.

I didn't see this til now...my apologies. But I did end up retaking the test & made an A...go figure. How did you do?

Is your doctor afraid of the cancer getting worse or coming back? Are you in remission? I had leukemia 6 years ago & opted out of doing a stem cell transplant. I just did 6 months of chemo & achieved remission after 2 months of treatment. & then 4 months into treatment, I was almost normal again. Went back to college, got a summer job...life was great. & after 1 year and 3 months of being into remission, my cancer came back & my only option was the stem cell transplant. I did it with only an 80% match & 4 years later, I'm still kicking. Living life to the fullest. Got my BSN, got married, moved to another state, etc. But my doctor in the very beginning pushed the transplant. Even searched for the donor in case I changed my mind, but I said no...lots of risk involved & it's still fairly new compared to traditional treatment. Choice is always yours though!

I moved to FL last year as a new grad & it only took me 2 months to find a job. It def helps to have your BSN! I think that's why it didn't take as long. I know a friend & it almost took her a year to find a job with just her ASN.

Go ahead & get your ACLS maybe even your PALS.

I'm not sure how much experience is required but I've worked a year on my floor & have my chemo certification

I have an opportunity to work at cancer clinic, but I'm not sure if I want to. Would working five 8hr shift be better than three 12hr shifts? The clinic is also a 40 minute commute where my job now is only a 17 minute commute. I'm also afraid of a pay cut bc I work nights and get that shift diff. There's so much to think about...but the job at the clinic is ultimately what I actually want to do as a nurse. HELP!

Has anyone taken this? Thoughts? I just took the test & didn't make high enough although I made a 100 on every assignment the first time & used every resource while taking the test. I was feeling pretty confident until I saw my score. Total BS.

Any nurses where these types of shoes? I'm tired of wearing my nikes & want something cute, but I do NOT want to wear clogs... or anything of the sort. I'm 24 years old & like skinny pant scrubs so I think TOMS, Vans, or some chucks would look cute.

My base pay is $21/hr for a new grad. I get paid more since I work nights: $2.75 more from 7p-12a $4.75 more from 11a-7a. The scenery is great though. I love living here.

Health First & Wuesthoff are the 2 bigger healthcare facilities. Health First owns like 4 hospitals & other clinics. Wuesthoff owns 2 hospitals & other clinics. I would look into those first.

Graduated Dec 2013 with my BSN. Passed my NCLEX in January & licensed in GA..didn't apply for jobs bc I found out not long after my husband was getting stationed in FL in a couple months. Moved to FL in March, got my FL licensed in April, applied to about...20+ jobs, just landed my first job a week ago & start July 7th!

Also, when I moved down here, several nurses told me to go ahead & get my ACLS certification. Idk if that helped me land a job or not, but during my interview, the nurse managers seemed impressed that I already went ahead & got it.

I heard the same thing! It took one of my friends 4 months to find a job. Another almost a year. There is A LOT of ADN programs here so if you have your BSN, you tend to get a job quicker. Its only been 2 months since I got my FL lisence, & I already have a job. Where do you live?
