  1. I am from Jamaica, I'm attending school in NC
  2. I am from Jamaica, I attending school in NC
  3. I live in Rocky Mount and attend Barton in Wilson, you can get into Barton with as low as GPA 2.9, depending on the pool that year. Very expensive school, but really small and intimate setting. Highly competitive and u must have more than 79 to progress, people drop out of those classess like flies. I don't think it's hard to get into the program but extremely easy to drop out
  4. Hi I moved here from bronx NY and I am entering my Junior year of the BSN program in Wilson NC. It is pretty rough and our passing grade is 79. I love the area and anticipate seeing you guys on allnurses.
  5. Thank you. What if you already used ur OPT for another career, do you have to then go home and apply for a green card through a sponsor. I should finish in May 2008 and my student visa expires then.
  6. I relocated fr. NY to Barton College in Wilson, NC. I begin this fall. I am going to be doing the traditional program and it will take me 3 years as a second degree. This is b/c I do not have prerequisites yet. This is an easy pace and Barton is a small school, individual attention. However, u can check on the net for accelerated programs in NC, but u would have ot get the pre-req. Good luck
  7. Well, I paid my way through grad school, worked a year and now I'm taking the prerequisites for nursing. I am an international student who cannot get federal loans etc. like u guys, so when I worked the year I saved as much money as I could, this is what I am using now. I think u should do a mixture of loans and self pay. The key here is sacrifice, you have to become a saver, if u were not that before. That means cutting off the cel phone, doing without that cute skirt, doing your hair less, see what I'm getting at. At least you have a choice of loans. It can be done if you want it bad enough. Keely
  8. Don't be discouraged, I am takin prereq. too. I need alot of motivation so I am doing my prereq at the school where I want to do my nursing. I would advise that you take them at a community college. In the meantime, focus on the ones you are doing now, focus real hard. It is worth it. Good luck
  9. Just to let you know I am in a very similar position, the only difference is I graduate in two years. I have a maters but went into a regular BSN program. Let me know what happens, seek out for your sponsor as soon as you can.
  10. I have been discouraged by a few people, especially my ex b/friend who thinks I ma too pretty to be a nurse doing all that butt wiping. Others tell me I am too bright to be a nurse. However, most of these people have only heard of nursing, they have not the full experience. My Aunt is a nurse manager and she has told me it is the best investment I could make. I beleive so. If it is even because of the fact that as long as you are able bodided, you will always havea job and the pay isnt bad either. Just thionk about it, it can never go to waste, you have or will have a new skill. I changed from Teaching to Social work and now in NS. Follow your heart
  11. I u/stand the difficulty making up your mind. I did my teaching certificate, then a BSc in Psychology. I worked as a teacher, then I did my MSW and worked as a social worker and during that time I realised I wanted more hands on, so now I am in NS. Did I mention I am 27? If u try t oescape the butt wiping, u are going to be miserable, u just have to do it. Even though I am going into case mgt, with my Social work background, I am stil lpreparing my self to do some dirtywork, though not for long. As we say in my country, if you want good, your nose has to run... U have to go through some nasty stuff as a nurse. Get ur BSN and put ur self in a position to not have to do it for long. By the way, I am 27, done alot, but I dont think I or yourself or anyone else for that matter is too old, as long as u can stand on ur feet. Salary is commensurate on experience, where you work and hours. 12 hour shifts are good and nights pay more than days. Make up your mind, we arent gettin any younger
  12. That is clearer, thanks. It has to be in the same subject. Got it :)
  13. Didn't I read that you get OPT for each level of training. I know someone who did a bachelors, got OPT then did masters and got OPT again. There are several things written by immigration, sometimes you just have to try your luck. For example, everyone I know who is on a H1B visa is performing a job that couyld be performed by Americans. Eg. accounts, computers, teaching and social work, isnt this contradictory to what immigration says... the employer should prove that there is no American that could fill that position? I do trust your expertise but this is something I have been tryin to get down to, at my last school the international stud. advisor had extracted something for immigration sayin you could get a second OPT if it is at a higher degree, then I sometimes hear that you cant get it twice. If the later is true, I guess I might be in a little problem post completionof nursing. Unless I am so lucky everyting comes through in the time given me to stay in the country after compleion of studies, which is 3 months or less. Do you see my concern?
  14. I just started, with the science prereq. I am estimating that I will be finished in 3 years, around Fall 2007 or Spring 2008. What country are you from?
  15. Thanks for the response. Yeah, I'm familiar with OPT I did that after I completed my MSW, however, I am going to a lower degree now, dont know if I can get OPT again. Just tryin to link up with other foreign students. Thank you
