I am the weekend RN Supervisor in a LTC and though my LPN's don't have to call the physician and deal with the orders they do have the following skill sets: Starting IV's, giving IV antibiotics and maintaining IV lines, PICC care and flushes, Trach care, Colostomy Care, Wound Vac and wound care, PEG tubes and feedings, Oxygen and nebulizer treatments, medication administration. Their assessment skills improve quickly on the job as well as their documentation skills. As a manager in the acute setting, I would hire one of these nurses in a heartbeat.

Yes your attitude about "sucky hospital job" and an undesirable job such as home health makes me think that you think you are better than your peers. We don't need any more "heroes" in nursing. We need kind compassionate people who are team players and want was is best for the patient we are caring for. I have 20 years experience as an ER nurse and currently work in a nursing home. Because of my ER background I have been able to assess and intervene for a patient before they "crashed". The patient and the family members were thankful for my acute observation skills. Nursing homes are consistently admitting people for rehab to strengthen them up before they go home to live on their own. As far as home health, I would not hire a new grad. What happens when you cannot get that wound vac to work or have trouble starting an IV or drawing blood? What if you can not get the colostomy to function without leaking or have difficulty accessing that port? No one down the hall for you to call on. Let alone the complexity of putting it all together on the OASIS. I think you need to start out on a medical surgical floor and learn the basics of nursing. And maybe a little humility.

I like to take some part of their conversation and say, "that reminds me, I have to get back to work". That lets them know that I have a job to do and I am currently not working by standing and talking to them. I don't want to make them feel bad about talking though, so I will say something to the effect, "you have had a fascinating life, or that is very interesting, I would like to hear more if I can get a few moments of free time later....as I am walking to the door...it works great! To say you feel faint and need to get a drink....you might as well tell them they are boring you to tears and you want to go take a break....

It was odd, my recruiter, just stopped communicating with me. At first I thought she had fallen ill or some personal tragedy but as time has passed, still no contact. I finally stopped trying and just got another job. Things work out though. I started working as the day weekend supervisor (12 hour shifts) at a nursing facility about 4 weeks ago and I really like it! PRN home health during the week to supplement. Guess it is a good thing Danielle stopped communicating!

I have sent the application, a LOT of personal information, SS#, nursing license #, copies of old tax form W2's and haven't heard from my recruiter in over a week. Have emailed and called and now I am scared this is some sort of scam. Am I wrong???
