Hey ??, thanks for this information. You are absolutely correct about pay. I meant that I know I'll have to take the 1st crappy job with a crappy pay rate once my license is changed. I just don't want to be forced out of nursing.. I have been a nurse for a decade and had plans to do 3 to 4 more decades before I retire. I'm distraught at the idea that I'll be unable to find employment and forced to do something else in order to feed my small children. This just sucks. Can you tell me more about getting stipulations lifted after 12 months and how thay affected your job outlook?

1. This is helpful information. Thank you. Unfortunately I don't work in a state that has unions so that's not an option. 2. The hospital does check to make sure are licenses are still active when it's time for renewal, so July of 2026 for me. But doesn't the BON make you inform your employer of the ruling/punishment? Especially if there are stipulations. (Luckily no narcotics, DUI, or any diversion is involved with my case) 3. I do have a lawyer. We area still in the invegation phase. My goal is for my lawyer to get the stipulations/ restrictions/ and fined to be a minimal as possible once a judgement has been made. 4. I don't have liability insurance, do I need it? And yes, I'll have to do a deep dive for facilities that we hire a nurse with an encumbered license. That thought alone is keeping me up at night tbh.

Hey, thank you for this information. 1. Were you granted modification after the 1st year and early termination after the 2nd? 2. Also, were you able to keep your job once your license was out under probation? I am currently working on a unit that I love but I'm a new hire so the Manager and I are just cordial, no long standing relationship. I would love to stay on my unit but it's in a major hospital and they may terminate me becuase of this. I'm sooooooo afraid of becoming unemplyable for 3 years or more.

Thanks in advance for reading and responding to my post. I have been contacted by my state Board of Nursing for a sentinel event. I am heart broken and very regretful over the event. I have been Nursing for 9 years and this is the 1st time this has ever happned to me. Lets get right to it. The sentinel event did lead to a patient's death, but (I later found out) the patient was terminally ill with stage 4 cancer with mets. I did my Nursing assessment and asked the patient appropriate questions (it was during shift change) before the patient left for a test. I hadn't gotten report and I did not have access to a computer to look at orders. However, the patient was Alert and Oriented so I believed the answers given by the patient. Well it turns out that the patient needed life saving equipment at all times and I did not provide that equipment becuase the patient denied needed anything. The patient ended up coding and was removed from life support days later. Again, I am heart broken, shocked, and regretful. I have been contacted by my state's BON about the event. I know I need a lawyer to try to salvage my license. I am a single mother of 2 toddlers. Nursing has given me the ability to care and provide for my children. I am terrified that I will have my license suspended or revoked for negligence or something similar. I know the board is not on my side. I have NEVER made this type of mistake before. I also haven't had a patient be dishonest in the type of care that they require. I am at a loss. I was terminated from that job but was able to fund work again. Now I am afraid that I'll be fired from my new job and unable to work again ad a nurse. Heck I'm still paying on my school loans. Ugh, I'm so distraught. But worst of all, I caused a patient harm and I HATE that. That is not who I am. I come to work every day to be advocate for my patients and strive to give the best care that I can each and every day. Has anyone used the NSO attorneys to represent them against the Board of Nursing?? Help please, I gotta respond to this letter immediately.

Glad someone made this post. I've been thinking of a total change of from Med Surg to NICU. Bumping for my input and advice from others!!

Bumping for more advice! I love to teach/educate my patients and other nurses...but I'm hesitant to get a MSN in education because I don't want to lose opportunities.

After graduation I actually did both Psych and MedSurg as a new nurse. MedSurg full time, Psych PRN. I needed the hours/$$$ to get married and put a down payment on a home with my husband, and I realized that a lot of my MedSurg patients had psych issues so I became a great asset to my unit and I learned a lot! I'm still doing it 3 years later!!

I've only recently started working 8 hour shifts. There are pros and cons, I like seeing the sun and being able to spend more time with hubby since he's a teacher and has a set 7-3 schedule. But I sometimes your psych patients make you regret having to see them 5x a week!!! Trying to decide if I should go back to my old psych job and be happy with the 12s. Seems like I can schedule like a little bit better when I know I'm off 4 days a week.

For the people that have already passed the exam, would you mind saying if your license reflects the certification?? Looking to take it in the next 4-6 months!!

Great article and great posts! I am currently searching for my passion in nursing and how to capitalize on it. I am currently working MedSurg, Psych and LTAC/Rehab (all are PRN). I don't know where I'll be in a few years, so I'm am testing my options lol! Luckily I am in my 20s and don't mind working 60 hrs/week while paying off my student loans and building my savings! Wow, what an eye opener! I just accepted my first position (PRN) in a LTC/rehab facility and I wondered how much education the DON job needed. I have 2 years of bedside MedSurg experience that I am still building upon. I have always been afraid of management in these type of facilities due to being forced to be on call and the salary pay. Are there any LCT/rehab facilities that don't require upper management to cover shifts?

Adding life to this thread. I've been thinking about a full time job and having 2 PRN jobs. Basically I've been in nursing for 2 years and I haven't found an area that I love, but I do love being a nurse, hence all the jobs. I guess I could use the money to pay off my student loans and start investing. But I am truly searching for a specialty that I will fall in love with!! Currently working Psych, Med/Surg, and LTAC! Wish me luck!

Going to interview for an ante-partum position tomorrow! Hopefully my 2 years of Med Surg experience will help, I've always been interested in OBGYN!
