Grab and Go Bag
Hmm… do u mean my own handbag or the first aid bag for field trips? If my own handbag, here you go: pulse ox, cpr mask, stethoscope, pen light, knee hammer, bell hammer, blood pressure cuff, small stationery bag (pen, pencil, highlighter, eraser, paper clips, etc.), school nurse note pad, pads, purse (rn license, health insurance cards, etc.), etc.

Limited protein?
Thank you for your help… hmm… I have none of these helpers you mention… other nurses recommend letting the teachers determine jointly with parents but mom insists that child can eat whatever and no need to worry about the amount of protein - I disagree however… MD did say that snacks must be given within the protein amount… So maybe I can just call and ask the MD if any protein-free snacks as labeled on the nutrition labels or pure sugar candies are ok… hmm… I'd probably just fax these over to the student's MD then… Thank you!

Limited protein?
Thank you! I just wanted to know if besides the lunch and breakfast that must come within the amount of protein required. Can teachers give protein-free snacks to the student? If so, what kinda snacks can I put on the health action plan (candies? or any snacks with no protein 0 on nutrition labels?)

drop attacks ?
Thank you! Unfortunately, the district attorney at my district is pretty difficult to reach and we have no access to him. There's no IEP and I suggest a helmet but it's not prescribed. Administrator asked if we could have the student stay at home until his medical needs are stabilized. Is that a good approach at all? Thank you!

Limited protein?
Thank you for the comments. The doctor did write a specific amount of protein. Let's say 5g of protein. The doctor confirmed for that 5g is for the entire school time. So during lunchtime, we already make sure child receives just less than or equal to 5g of protein. What mom wanted to do is to have child eat whatever child wants to eat regardless of protein - of course, i can't do this for child's safety of course. I wanted to know if it's ok to list protein-free snacks and to check ingredient list to make sure no protein is listed as 0 for the serving size and make sure child eats just the serving size for the protein listed. I'll fax it to the doctor for approval. since mom is uncooperative, and the doctor is pretty approachable for clarification of orders. Thank you!!!

Limited protein?
Hello: What would you do when you have a student with limited amount of protein for school? Can teacher give out protein-free snacks to students during classroom treats? Would you include reading ingredients on snacks and example of protein-free snacks for students at school? Mom does not want to approve snacks prior to classroom treats. Mom keeps saying child can eat whatever child wants but doctor's note indicates limited amount of protein. Thank you!

drop attacks ?
hello: What could you do when you have a student with frequent drop attacks at school? Student and family refused helmet. Not special ed.? Moved from another state. No doctor wants to see him in the state here yet due to insurance changes from state to state (medi-cal). ER doctor unable to increase/change med to better control seizures? Administrators are fearful for child's injuries. Thank you!

Give meds or not?
Thank you very much for your kindness, explanation and clarifications. No, I'm contemplating taking on a camp nurse job. I just imagine all the situations that may happen, thanks to my overimagination and a worry wart nature I possess. Thanks so much though!

Give meds or not?
1 - If campers come with medication that is not in its original container or is mislabeled AND there's no doctor's order or doctor on staff, what would you do? Would you give the medications after clarifying with parents and google and the student has had it before? 2 - If you refuse to give the student the medications and the student and parent insist on child taking the medications because you cannot clarify what it is, do you just document that you refuse but child insists and child takes it? Thank you very much for your kindness.

tylenol?
what would you do if you have no doctor's order for tylenol and child brings in a ziplock of sth that looks like tylenol that you can identify by google? I'd personally not give it and if child insists, that is the child's decision? Child is responsible for it and you are not?

albuterol before exercise
i have a parent requesting not giving her child albuterol before exercise despite the dr's order requesting it. I had mom write down what she wants and documented it. Is it okay? Is there anything else that you need to do?

no dr's order
1 - do u give meds with no dr's order in camp? 2 - such as meds in zip bag ... ? 3 - what about over the counter meds ... if kids bring in those meds ... do u give them? 4 - when u kinda guess that what meds they are based on ur searches online of the the shapes they are in and/or that u call and confirm with parents? ... 5 - Are searches online enuf to give meds to students without dr's orders? ... 6 - What meds u won't give without dr's order? 7 - what about birth control pills? ... if it doesn't come in the labeled bottle, of course with no dr's orders, and u can't confirm with parents because it's a sensitive issue that law prevents u from disclosing with proper authorization from the child, what would u do? 8 - what about psych meds...? what do u do with those? Your kindness is appreciated!

Not potty trained
I had a similar situation. I had the teacher's aide change the pull-ups and keep a log of diaper change. Also, I assessed if the teacher's aide knows how to do the pull-ups and encouraged her to call mom/me as needed. Hope it helps.

procedure observation
I haven't done a procedure for a long time. I wonder how do you contact the hospital to observe how the procedure is done? Or, do you know where they can train you correctly how to do the procedure? Thanks!
