Navy Nurse Corps Question: OR nursing
Thank you! That does answer some of my questions. I did have a LTCD reach out today and he sent me all the medical documents to fill out. I’d be fine with almost any area of nursing as I have different experience. I am also nationally certified as an EMT and volunteer on an ambulance service. I earned my BSN in 2011, masters in 2017. How is life active as a nurse? Do you have a family? How do they like the lifestyle? I enjoyed the navy when I was in but got out to go back to school. I had intentions of going back in but ended up getting married, having 3 kids, and more schooling. I’m at a point in my life I think we are ready for some changes. My brother in law is AF he is a TACP. He and his wife seem to enjoy the AF.

Navy Nurse Corps Question: OR nursing
Hi, I am wondering if if anyone is able to answer some questions for me. Before I start I will give a little background. I have 4 years active duty navy from 2003-2007. Have been a nurse now for 10 years, have a MSN, as well as my CNOR, 5 years OR experience, and my current role consists of being the nurse educator for 24 ORs with many specialties. I am having a hard time finding a recruiter that will respond or answer my questions. Is there a need in the navy for OR nurses? I would like to apply fy20. How many open billets are there for RNs? With prior military and nursing experience, what rank would I commission as? What are the duty station options? I would love to be on the east coast (southern area). I enjoy teaching and training, i would love to train and teach in the navy (future goals). I also have a hubby and kids who are very supportive. So want to make sure this would be the best move for all of us. Thanks in advance! Tiffany

No veterans preference for military vets who work as nurses at the VA hospitals.
Wow.... Butthurt? Little do you know I have great experience outside of "just" being an educator. I have long term care, critical care, as well as serve my community as an EMT. Being an NP, you may want to proof read before you post. Just saying.

VA Hiring Process
I am struggling with the VA hiring process. I am a 5+ Veteran, MSN, and lots of experience. I recently interviewed for a Care Manager position at our local VA clinic. I found out I did not receive the position, HR was not answering my questions so I submitted an inquiry. I found out the nurse hired was external, has her BSN, and is less qualified than I am. It is so frustrating and I think I am giving up on the VA as an option. I do have a good job just thought it would be fulfilling to work with fellow Vets.

I know this is very old but I have to disagree. I am a 5 Point vet, MSN in Education (from an accredited school), 10+ years of experience within many areas and I was not selected for a Nurse Care Manager position. I submitted a FOIA and found out the RN selected has her BSN, Not a vet, and has less experience (external hire). I have filed with VETS. Unfortunately they do not give preference.

Observer in the Operating Room?
My facility has a loose policy regarding observers in the operating room and I am working on a new process. I have recently accepted the Educator position for our Main OR, OSC, and Cath Lab. The current process falls on the Educator coordinating all visitors and it has become so overwhelming I don't have time for actual education. In the past week I have put together some data regarding infection control, OR traffic, and patient safety. Then I also have been coordinating an algorithm to direct the flow of visitors and who is responsible for them. I guess my questions are.... Who facilitated your organizations observations? What documents are required for observers? Outside the facility? Internal Employees? Are observers placed on the OR schedule? Is there any information out there that I may be missing that can assist me in this endeavor?

Scrubs run the OR, not nurses.
Wow. This is interesting. In my OR we still have nurses who scrub, not many but some do. It is also a state requirement that an RN circulate. Some states are now passing laws that circulators must be RN's. AORN does a great job keeping this list updated. It may be something to look into. Contact you senate and try to push the issue. After-all we are the patient advocate and it is our job to keep patients safe during surgery. As the Perioperative Nurse Educator I feel it is vital that nurses be present in every OR and if this is not your states requirement than it should be addressed.

Interview for Perioperative Clinical Nurse Educator
Thank you for all the info. The role is overseeing the main or with 20 suites and the OSC that also has 20 suites. Staff wise I will oversee education for around 240. I do need to come up with an outline of what I feel could be improved/ changed. At the moment our orientation process needs some adjustments. It will be a learning curve for me.

Does the VA prefer to hire internally?

Does the VA prefer to hire internally?
Thanks. That makes me feel alot better. It is for a care managment position and the opening stated 2-3 years RN experience. I have been a nurse for 5 years and have long term care, ICU, CCU, and OR experience. Plus I'm working on my MSN in education and leadership. I hope I have a shot. I've always wanted to work with fellow vets.
