You all do know that you can get your Rx for corrective lenses from your optometrist and order a cheap (if not free) pair from coastal contacts right?

I think it depends on the school. i was told by an academic advisor at my school that they look at applications and have a ranking system. 1. everyone who applies and has their pre-reqs completed 2. those who have most of their pre-reqs completed. 3. those who have none or very few pre-reqs completed. Then within those groups applicants who have all A's are taken first and then applicants who have mostly A's etc etc.

Do it! I'm going into an absn program too and I have three little kids who will be 7, 4 and almost 2 when I start. Is it going to be easy? No. But for 18 months (the duration of my program) I can do it. The time will pass anyways and if I decide to further pursue a msn or other degree I will be that much closer. I had the option of a hospital adn program but in the end if I also got a bsn after (most of the hospitals in my area are going that way) it would be the same cost but 3-4 yrs vs 18 months. I'd rather go and go hard, than string it out over 2 yrs for an adn and another 2 for a bachelors and another 2 for an msn. I'm only going to be 31 when I start my program so not old by any means but I'd like to get as much education done Before I reach a certain age just for my own personal reasons. Also, my program has the option of working as a student nurse after so many credit hrs and I've heard about testing out to become an LPN too. My plan is to work nights/wknds for a few years while my kids are younger so that I can be there for their school stuff. Plus I think a f/t nurse is 36 hrs (please correct me if I'm wrong) so that's 3 12 hr shifts. Totally doable with a family IMO. My program is also a night/wknd program so that way I will still be home during the day for sick kids/days off of school and my dh will be home with them when I'm in school. What program are you going into in Albany?

Ty! I'm in an absn program and I don't want to waste my freetime now but would like to start familiarizing myself with something.

I have a few months before my nursing program starts and I'd like to start learning the drugs that are most commonly used instead of reading ahead in my textbooks. So...what book should I get? Which ones should I start studying? I am pretty clueless in this subject matter so HELP!

I have three kids (6, 3, and 1) I just did 5 pre reqs in 10months. When my husband had his two days off a week those were my days to "work" meaning I locked myself in my room and studied, studied, studied. I was not to be disturbed unless it was an emergency or the baby needed to be nursed (he was 4 months when I started.) for me the study when the kids are asleep didn't work for me bc I felt like someone was constantly waking up needing something and I couldn't focus.

What do you say to a patient when you walk into their room and they're less than thrilled to have a SN? What do you say/do when your patient flat out refuses to have a SN?

I think it's pretty common to do at least a yr of med- surg to get experience under your belt and then apply to s different dept. at least that's what I've seen most of my nurse friends do.

Yes!!! I just finished my last pre-req (micro bio) and am starting an absn in January. I plan on enjoying my kids and reviewing a&p especially the nervous system and the cardiovascular system.

Do you feel that there are certain aspects where being a mom had helped you or given you an "edge" (if that makes sense?) as in, I've been pee'd, pooped and puked on soooo many times since being a mom that I feel desensitized to it to a Degree. Same for mucous. I've heard suctioning out trachs are horrible

I took all four of those online through portage.com (nursing abc) my local community college (suny school) REFUSED to recognize the courses but both the local hospital adn programs and the two local college absn programs recognized them and accepted my grades. It basically depends on your school. They do list on portage who accepts their credits. This was much cheaper for me and also allowed me to get them out of the way very quickly. I do not recommend online labs if you have no lab experience though.

A&p is hard. I tried taking it once and the prof abd I just didn't mesh. I dropped it bc I didn't want a c and took it with another prof and got an a.

Lol thx houtx! Is there a lot of mathematical equations then? Mine has stats as a pre-req. I haven't taken stats in forever so just wondering if I should brush up.

I was brutally honest and talked about my three kids and how they've gotten me use to having all kinds of unpleasant bodily fluids on me, how they've taught me to think on my feet when blood was pumping out of a head injury or a gaping wound and how I needed to be calm and assure them that they were ok. Etc etc

You'll definitely need a car. The school site is in Liverpool so you'll need to get there from your apt and then get to clinical sites like the Syracuse hospitals or plan to take the bus but that will be a 2 hr trip bc you'll have to switch buses downtown. Also, they have clinical a at a Utica hospital too.
