One word: Don't

Hi Klone. To clarify it was a father and his male visitor. They smoked in the NICU bathroom, stunk up the entire hallway. I couldn't use the bathroom because of all the smoke. I would have had them detained by security for a little talk. Sometimes a security guard has some clout, I don't know, appeal to authority maybe. I don't have the answers, but what I don't like is the attitude of oh well what are you going to do. That's enabling. Moderator: please close topic. Thanks

Hi. I left unit to use the bathroom and the hallway reeked of pot. Two people were waiting to be buzzed out. I hadn't met them so I didn't know who they were visiting. So I went into the bathroom, but couldn't stay because the odor of pot was intense. I went to report it to the charge nurse and the nurse that was taking care of the visitors baby said It's ok, I took care of everything. Meaning she asked them to leave because of the second hand smoke. Now the charge nurse did nothing and the staff started to tease me about knowing what pot smells like. But nothing was ever done or documented. My question is what would you have done? I think I would have called security to document the smell in the bathroom. Most all the nurses say our security is useless. Why do we enable visitors to do the wrong thing in the name of family friendly units? Why does no one care? Just wondering what other charge nurses would do. Thanks

While I understand Ned's context on this subject, I have been where you are many, many times. I have heard CNAs telling patients they are the nurse. I've had them be rude and lazy. But now after a long time dealing with that, I work in the NICU and we don't use CNAs. So instead of spending my time being diplomatic and understanding of this behavior, I can now use all the extra time taking more care of my patients.

I've done everything then I guess. I've been over the downloaded information quite a few times and did not see anything about proof of contact hours, so I guess I'll go by NedRN's reply and submit without any mention of CEU's. Thanks.

Hi, My California license by endorsement packet is almost complete and ready for submission. For those travelers that have applied for licensure by endorsement in the state of California, did you need to provide proof of 30 contact continuing education hours? I have read through the packet numerous times and can not find anything about providing that information. I guess I could call the nursing board, but thought I would ask here first. Thanks a lot.

Hi again, can anyone tell me if they have worked at LA Children's was the housing provided within walking distance or near public transportation? I am not taking a car with me and the recruiter knows this, but I am still a bit concerned about being able to get into work on time etc. Any thoughts about housing in the area of that hospital will be greatly appreciated. Even if you can recommend a place by name or a specific road etc. that would be even better. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am seasoned travel NICU nurse and want to go to LA to help out a family member. I only have level III experience. In my last job, which was about a year with contract extensions, I was mainly kept with level II infants because the unit needed level III assignments for new staff and regular staff that preferred to work level III. That was ok with me, but it seems that Los Angeles Children's is a level IV. I guess my question is, are my chances of working there diminished because I have no level IV experience? Has anyone worked there that can tell me if this hospital is travel friendly? I'd appreciate any help as California is not a compact state and even though the agency will reimburse me for licensure I don't want to go through all of it if the hospital won't really want me. But when you go to work and there are 22 "well" babies with 2 nurses, which is against national guidelines, and you somehow manage to get through the shift(12 hours of hell and tears)because the 2 nurses are literally super nurses, management expects you can do it AGAIN. These 2 nurses didn't do anyone in our profession any favors. I have gotten phenomenal results calling the corporate hotline. The hospital has to address the charges. Seriously I have successfully changed things with that method and anonymous letters to JCHAO work wonders. Fight this way and we may win the battle. I have won many and have seen lots of changes as a result.

As for 3-4 babies on the same schedule you use common sense and stagger feeds. The next nurse most likely will not have my same assignment so we do the best we can keeping them on "schedule". It's not the ideal, but it does happen.
