Has anyone ever done this?
Thanks all for the suggestions. I am trying to get into clinic nursing, but have not had any job offers yet. I would like to also, pursue case management nursing and have applied for a few positions with no offers. Guess I just have to press on.

New student starting RN program.. Worried about finding jobs..
Really, I don't think there is a "nursing shortage" and I also think hospitals are very slow in hiring new staff. I know on my floor we have been short a nurse since November and a PCT since August and still have not gotten replacements. The staff is tired of working short staffed and tired of working extra because of it. If I were King :-) I would at least make it easy for managers to replace the staff that has left. Now the managers have to put in a request to the administration and wait for them to approve the hiring of a nurse, tech etc. which can take months because our floor is not their priority. Then the manager has to interview people multiple times and finally make a decision. Then, present an offer and have if get accepted. Then, drug screen, physical, strength testing (yes strength testing :-)) and then orientation. Finally they are ready to work on the floor. Whew!

i'll probably get flamed to the moon and back for this but..
I would like the nurse who is competent AND caring to take care of me. Yes, we all are getting paid for what we do, but people are not machines. I would want someone with real compassion because I think that person will, "go the extra mile" to insure my care and satisfaction were being met.

Has anyone ever done this?
I am an RN on an acute floor in a hospital and I am burned out. :-( I want to stay in the medical field and I would not mind working in a clerical position. I have tried to get into clinic nursing without success so far. I really do not care if the pay is lower I just don't like where hospital floor nursing is going. It seems it is more important to get a patient his/her coffee than it is to make sure his/her blood pressure is WNL. I feel like I am working in a 5 star hotel and having to take insults and condescending comments from patients with a smile. I worked as a patient care tech a few years ago before I became a nurse and it did not seem that way then. The hospital also seems to ask you to take on more patients than is safe and gives no support at all. I just want to go to work and not come home dreading the next time I have to go to work. Back to my original question-Has anyone ever gone from floor RN to a clerical position in the medical facility where they worked or other medical office? What did you say when you were being interviewed as to why you wanted to go from RN to clerical worker? Thanks for the help!

What do you think?
Right now I work as a RN in a hospital. I have applied to a Case Management position and know the name and email address of the Manager of the Department. My question is: Do you think I should send her an email telling her who I am, my experience and education and that I would love to get together with her to talk about the possibility of working in the Case Management Department? Thanks all for your help!

Losing my religion
You seem to believe that either truth is relative (if you believe something it will be real) or that all religion is false so it does not matter what one believes. I believe there is a spiritual truth that governs this world for everyone whether they believe it or not and I want everyone to find that truth. I believe that truth is found in Christianity. Do I walk into every patient's room and tell them my spiritual beliefs?, no. Do I share my beliefs with patients who want to talk about spiritual matters? You bet I do. Do I pray with patients who want to pray? Yes. Do I pray my patients will come to see the truth about Jesus? Yes I do because I believe it is true. When I see posts like this I feel people are trying to bully those who take their spiritual beliefs seriously into staying silent. I can either listen to you or Jesus who said go and tell the good news to everyone.

Long shifts = Higher levels of burnout
I think nurses burn out not necessarily because of 12 hour shifts, but because of the heavy patient load caused by floors being understaffed. Also, the amount of charting and rounding and "service" tasks nurses have to perform because of the new medicare rules (writing names, dates, goals and such on each patient's whiteboard, filling out rounding sheets, giving report in each patient's room, etc) that are added onto an already full day (assessing each patient and then charting that assessment, passing out meds, performing dressing changes and other treatments, calling Drs for patients who have changes in their conditions, getting new orders from Drs and performing them, admitting or discharging patients, starting IVs, ect) causes nurse frustration and burnout. I don't know why hospitals don't lobby congress to change the medicare rules so that nurses can begin to practice nursing instead of feeling like they should have gotten a hotel/motel management degree instead of a nursing degree. I think if medical facilities started listening to nurses and caring about their employees we would not see as much nurse burnout.

New Travel Nurse
Hi all, I am new to this board and travel nursing. I have just received an assignment at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. I will be floating to Ortho, M/S, Renal, Neuro and Oncology. Has anyone traveled to this Hospital before? Anyone work on these floors before? Any hints or tips about this hospital or traveling in general? Thanks so much for your help!
