Lehman College Nursing program 2013
Hi up_a_hill! During orientation it was mentioned for accelerated student the cut off for this past incoming class was a 3.7, and for generic students a 3.5. I don't think they really put much emphasis on your previous degree gpa. Now i only applied to generic and I was accepted with a 3.9 gpa and I received an 86 on the HESI exam. I think the gpa and HESI exam is what is looked at mostl Sorry I couldn't give much info specifially about the accelerated, hope this helps!

Dosage question
Hello. For questions like these use this formula: Ml/minutes x drip factor. Since the first problem states 1 hour that is 60 minutes. So you would set up as so: 125 ml/ 60 minutes x drip factor which was provided. Good luck!

Is it a MUST to be able to drive once you start nursing school?
As the others mentioned, it depends where you live. I live in New York and we have public transportation, so I just use that. The public transportation is very unreliable sometimes, but I do not have money to buy a car right now. Gas is really expensive, and finding parking in New York is sometimes a joke. Most of the hospitals have parking but it is very expensive, so if you want to drive you must give yourself ample amount of time to find a parking. So public transportation, though it is annoying works best. But a car is nessacary if you live somewhere that does not have transportation or requires lots of traveling. I do hope though that I can afford a car soon. Luckily the hospital I am going to be at this semester is only 20 minutes from my house by train!!!!! Good luck this semester!

Summer internships
Hi! Yes , the three programs I have found so far are for BSN students entering their senior year of nursing school. They all seem to have similar requirements eg transcripts, resume and cover letter, as well as letters of recommendation. I am not particularly sure where I could find how many slots are available, as they don't mention it, but I am sure I can get this information from the recruiters? I live in New York, so I'm pretty sure there are many applicants. Based on pictures that I have seen of past Nurse interns, I have seen from 15-20 students, so so far that is my only indicator. These are all paid internships, so I wouldn't think many applicants are chosen Thank you for your advice.

Summer internships
Hi everyone! I am beginning my nursing program in exactly two weeks and I cannot wait!!!! Anyways, I have already began to look into summer internships for summer 2014. So far, I have found 3 internships that I am interested in. However, is three enough, or should I plan to apply to more? My choices are a bit limited due to personal preferences. For example, many of these internships require a lot of traveling. So, how many internships should I aim to apply to? Thank you in advance to all who reply to this!

Hunter Bellevue School Of Nursing? Other Nursing Schools in NYC?
Hello. Now I did not apply to Hunter's program, but I did apply to Lehman, since both are in the CUNy system I assume they have pretty similar processes. Now you say you are entering freshman year this fall, if this is true, you will not finish all pre-req's within one year. Unless you already have a bachelor's, then a year is possible. However, if you are a first time college student, or do not have any degrees, then it will take you about 2 years before you can apply to the program. Before applying to Lehman I had to take anatomy and physiology I & II, microbiology, general chemistry with lab, and organic chemistry with lab, and lastly, the human development and lifespan. Along with these classes you must complete all general education requirments( language, English, liberal arts classes, writing intensives). For lehman specifically, in order to apply to the program, one must accumulate a total of 60 credits with all of the above courses mentioned completed. A grade C or better must be obtained, though I recommend B+ and above. Now lehman no longer uses the NLN, they use the HESI exam now. We were tested on A&P, English and math. I received an 86 out of 100, not great but I got in, but I have a 3.9 gpa to go along with that. In terms of other colleges in ny, each is different. So I agree with the previous poster, do you research now, and get all dates, requirements, etc as soon as possible. Also, if you plan to apply to any thee cuny college, you must be admitted to Lehman college itself first before you can apply. I am sorry I was only able to give information about Lehman, but I believe the process and requirements are similar. Good luck. Stay focused, study hard, and you will make it!

Backpack, watch for nursing program?
Also IMO, getting a really expensive watch during nursing school is not wise. You want a watch that if it got damaged from some bodily fluid or was scratched you'll be able to shrug it off and get a new one. But that's just what I think! :)

Backpack, watch for nursing program?
I'm not sure what a sweeping secondhand watch is, but I believe the nursemates watch has a ticking second hand. But I highly recommend it, when I received it though, it did not work, so I payed about 5 dollars and got a new battery, and that did the job. So that is the only complaint I have.

Backpack, watch for nursing program?
Hi! If your school requires you to brings your textbook you need a regular book bag. Rolling kind? Eh not a fan lol. In terms of a watch, I am not sure if you are a woman or guy(sorry no offense). But I got the nursemates basic dial watch on amazon. It was only 25 bucks!! I absolutely love it! It is white, waterproof, EXCELLENT second hand( they made it red and longer than the other 2 hands), and military time. It's cute too, so that can't hurt!!! Also, congrats on beginning nursing school! I begin in 3 weeks as well.

Please share your GPAs??
Cumulative: 3.9 Science: 3.9 My school also requires the HESI exam and I received an 86% on that. I'm beginning the BSN program this fall. Can't wait!!

Opinion on your uniforms?
I think our uniforms are okay... for tall people that is lol. It's a royal blue zip top from Dove Apparel, and white pants from anywhere. The top is so uncomfortable, very itchy and heavy, I was sweating within five minutes. I like how it fits me though, it's just really long for me; I'm very petitie( 4'10), so the top looks like a loose mini dress on me.. Haha! I would love to get it cut, but the pockets are at the bottom of my top, so there's no way around that:( oh well only two years of this.

Lehman College Nursing program 2013
Hey! I went today to get my packet and permission. I arrived around 8:45 am and left around 1. It took so long because we had to wait for advisors to arrive, in order to get permission. I believe permission for new nursing students ends when the office closes, or when the advisor decides to leave. I was told faculty was given the option to come to work early and leave early, or come to work late and leave late. I got all my classes. The accelerated have classes set aside for them, so even though you didn't go, you will be fine! Good luck!!!

respiratory distress in neonate
NicuGal, I completely forgot about the fever part. Woops. Sorry about that :) In that case, scratch out my response.

respiratory distress in neonate
I am not too sure here, being that I am only now starting in the fall. But I do remember learning about this once in A&P. I'm thinking neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Although this is more common in premature babies, it is possible to have to full term babies. RDS occurs when the child's lungs are not fully developed causing a lack of production of surfactant. All the signs you mentioned-- flaring of nostrils, grunting, are signs of this. The major diagnosis factor is the child being premature, but as you mentioned, the child is 40 weeks. Other causes can be the mother having diabetes, a rapid labor, or decreased blood flow to the said child. So this can possibly be a diagnosis, if any of these things are true. Again, I'm sorry if I am wrong, I am only now beginning, but I've been reading a lot. And I remembered learning about surfactant during A&P.

Lehman College Nursing program 2013
@thecoybandit--- hmmm, that doesn't sound right. Why would they already choose our schedule, when they have no idea what our schedules are like outside of school. I personally don't want them making a schedule for me, this isn't highschool, it's college. Well either way I will be going on Monday. I will definitely keep you updated and let you know what happened if you are unable to come Monday.

Lehman College Nursing program 2013
@2jeanne- I'm not too sure about that. You'd have to call in and ask to be certain. @thecoybandit- yea that's what I was saying, there are enough seats for us. But if you look up the classes, there are different sections. So it all depends on what times work best for your schedule. You will definitely get into every class you desire, but the issue is getting the exact time you want. So it's all up to you. I really can't say for sure what will happen. But I'd like to get everything done Monday, so I begin preparing for physical, CPR etc. I'm already having trouble getting a doc's appointment to do a physical, they are all booked! ( I know I went off topic I apologize lol) But yes, I would say it depends if you are not too worried about the timing of your schedule, because there's room for everyone.

Lehman College Nursing program 2013
I don't think it'll be a mad house because there arent enough sections for us all, but because everyone wants to have a good sechedule. However, if you are set on specific sections, I suggest you probably go into work late, and just get to the department early in the morning. I waited four hours for HIN 268, so whether it'll be a madhouse or not, I'm not taking an risks. It's mainly just being early to get the exact schedule you want, if you're okay with a little compromising then no need to rush, because there's space for us all.

Lehman College Nursing program 2013
Hi tsuix3, any pre-req's that you take, whether taken at lehman or any other college will be accepted and counted towards your gpa. I do not believe you are allowed to retake any prereq's, and if you do your first grade will only be accepted. I could be wrong though but this is what I remember being told. A grade of a B is not a bad grade, however it all depends on what kind of grades other have received. Try to get A's for the rest of the prereqs if possible. I also urge you to go see an advisor at the nursing department. They can give you the most accurate advice. Just study hard, stay focused, and you will make it!

Lehman College Nursing program 2013
Of course NYU is worth the money! It is an excellent college, but sometimes that's not enough. I really don't want to be in debt, so it is only worth it if you know you can pay those loans off with ease or little struggle. Being that you hope to be a NP, you'll definitely make enough money to pay that off, but that depends on what other responsibilities you have. Good luck in your decision though. Plus, you got into NYU's program with lehman as one of your colleges, so I'm sure you'll get into a good grad program if you keep up that 4.0! In regard to the laziness of students at lehman, I completely agree. However, those students were probably not accepted. As one of my past teachers said, extra credit on an exam will only help those who will already be getting a good grade, because they are the ones who will know the correct answer. Plus I've never met someone who has received an A because of extra credit. Also thank you for the compliment! You will be an excellent nurse as well! Amazing grades!

I wish you the best of the luck! As you mentioned, try speaking to current NYU students to get their perspective. Because I can only give you a perspective of a Lehman student.
