  1. Hello Everyone I have a question about my CNA certification I just received on 10/2013 Now that I am certified, how often do I have to renew it, and what are the requirements to keep my CNA certification active in Texas ? I did look on Dads web-sight and read that I must renew after 2 years, but I need the specifics of the requirements, for instance, what is the education and work hour requirements in a facility. (and must the facility I work at have to have a certain type of license) in order for it to be recognized by the state of Texas, or do they just confirm employment? (rather it be an assistant living or nursing home) I sure would hate to find out after 24 months, that I was suppose to be doing something all along to keep my certification active and didn't. Thanks for any advice.
  2. This isn't a reply to any threads but I couldn't find the section for a new thread and I'm kinda new here so I apologize if I have posted in the wrong section, and this isn't a question, it's just something I wanted to get off my chest (sort of speak) I'm on my way to become a CNA, with classes behind me and half of clinicals behind me, I have one more week left to go of clinicals and then state testing. I wanted to share what it was like for me on that very first day of clinicals in a nursing home. I was told that some students will probably drop out at this point during clinicals, due to the realization of what it's really like working as a CNA. (hands on toileting, hygiene etc..etc..) I'm not dropping out because I knew from taking care of my mom which passed away from cancer years ago, what this type of job entails, however, after working that first day of clinicals, I went home and cried my eyeballs out. (I'm still not dropping out though) After drying my eyes, I started to really analyze everything that happen that first day of clinicals and something hugh dawned on me, hit me like a brick wall. What I thought at the time was cruelty was not at all cruel. After researching online,(good ol internet) I realized that the CNA I was shadowing was doing exactly the right thing. (for the residents benefit) Moving forward...Now the thing I'm trying to figure out is, WHO is responsible for keeping that supply room stocked. (gloves, ointment, soap, briefs) that sort of supplies. I have learned to not to be so fast to jump to conclusions, so for now, thats all I have to say about that. I have one more week to go of clinicals and then I will be taking the state test to become a Certified Nurse Assistant. I'm excited about it and hope to find a job in a nursing home that has as much compassion as I do, for the elderly.
  3. dsy89 Just something to think about..... First I want to say that it sounds like your a good caring, compassionate CNA otherwise you wouldn't have cared enough to give the whole situation another thought. (with that said) Perhaps your looking at it all wrong. (stay with me here) This particular resident ( I assume ) is up there in age. (right) well, think about her experience throughout her life. What if, just what if, she experienced loosing a love one (referring to a husband or x-husband), over someone that looks like you, or possible perhaps something in you, that reminds her of the one that caused her pain in her past. That could be the case and if so, it has nothing to do with you personally, if you stop to think about it. Since it's been almost a month now and she still hasn't changed her attitude toward you, I would just talk to the nurse about reassigning her to someone else. (it isn't your fault) Just something to think about....' P.S thank you for caring
  4. Turtlecat I have a question for you about this section of what you said, " I am constantly getting picked on for being slower than the other aides (who have been there for years on end, mind you) and for spending too much time with the residents." TurtleCat, I am in class to become a CNA and have never worked in a LTC yet, so please don't take this the wrong way because IM sure not judging you or anything but I wanted to ask you WHY DO YOU CARE so much about what the other aids think..? Is there something IM missing here? I mean are those other aids YOUR boss?
  5. The teachers numbers are only off a few numbers. (or I should say MY numbers are off by a few numbers) I just want to make sure I pass the CNA test by answering with accuracy should one of the questions be, at what point do you notify the nurse. When time comes for me to actually work at a facility, I will be sure and know what the RN wants me to report to her with exact number ranges.
  6. not sure what you mean by "no go words"
  7. I'm going to class to become a CNA and I even studied from the sylabus and book that we were told ahead of time to purchase for the class. I am frustrated because I have already rememberized some of the Vital sign numbers for normal range and reporting range, but the problem is the numbers are totally different from what the teacher says and the "Department of Aging and Disability Services" (Texas Curriculum for Nurse Aides in Long Term Care Facilities) say, so naturally I'm confused. Is it because each facility is different? Once I get my certificate and find a job, I will be sure and ask, "what are the reporting numbers for vitals", however for the test coming up soon, I need to know exactly the correct numbers. Shoot !! Even when I look online something comes up with different numbers for normal and when to report to the nurse. This is what I have remembered. (from studying) Are these numbers correct or not? Pulse (redial) Normal 76 Report anything below 60 and above 90 Respiration Normal 16 Report anything below 12 and above 22 BP Normal 120/80 Report anything below 100/60 and above 140/90 oral temp Normal 98.6 Report anything below 97 and above 99 Can someone please set the record straight on these vitals and please don't use the word "about" or "approximately". Thank you
  8. I'm like freaking out here because I have already started CNA class and was told that I had to have the 3rd hepatitis B shot done with by the time clinicals start. I had my first HP shot on 3/12/13 I had my second HP shot on 4/9/13 My BIG question is, whats the soonest I can have my third HP shot on? I was told by the nurse that gave me the second shot that I could get the 3rd one after eight weeks have past from the date of the second shot (4/9/13). (which is why I went ahead and started CNA class knowing that eight weeks would go by before clinicals started) Can someone PLEASE confirm this because I'm reading online diferent things about the time frame and I already enrolled and have already started (and PAID for) CNA class BASED on what the nurse said. Thank you for any information.....

  10. When you do a shadow, do you get paid for it? I mean how do we know that's just not a way to get free labor out of someone? (Just a thought)
  11. Glycerine82 What do you mean when you said "even though we're allowed to only use the sanitizer unless our hands are visibly soiled." ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????
  12. You CAN NOT be tired, I just got here.
  13. NO breaks!!! Get back to work.
  14. I said I needed bp in room 149, not the whole dang hospital.
  15. All you people make me scared to become a CNA, but I'm gonna do it anyway. If I'm doing something the wrong way, I don't mind being told about it in a respectful way. I'm not there to be your best friend, I'm there to do a job, and If I call out for help with a patient and you don't help because you don't like me, well.... SHAME on YOU!... for not thinking about the patient first. I just pray to god that when I am done with school and start looking for a job as a CNA, that I find a place that work together as a team because without team work, the ones that suffer in the end will be the patients.
  16. Hello everyone I start school in two weeks for CNA certification and have been studying for the written part of it (which I think I can pass that part) but have been reading about people failing in the skills part of it. I thought I would get a jump on studying the skills part by going to Youtube but leery about Youtube not being correct after reading the comments under the Youtube skills videos because someone seems to always comment (are most of the time anyway) by saying that it was done incorrect. I don't want to learn or study the wrong way so I ordered a free (NNAAP)Texas Nurse Aide Candidate handbook but they sent me one that has a old date of June 2011 on it. My question is, does anybody know of a accurate way to study for the skills testing for CNA for Texas. I just want to make sure I pass the first time by studying the correct way.
  17. Wow,, thanks for your input Hygiene Queen, duskyjewel, KelRN215 I haven't even started class for CNA yet, but I can tell you one thing, I would never tell a patient "Sorry, you're not my patient" The least a CNA can do is say, "I'll get your CNA right away" . Oh! and one more thing, I have very high respect for nurses. sorry about the font, I couldn't change it.
  18. Someone please correct me if IM wrong but it seems to me that if OBRA intentions was to improve the quality of life for residents then shouldn't they have put a limit on the ratio of residents to CNA's ? (and if there is one, please let me know where I can go to get that information)(Texas) I was reading a post about a CNA that was expected to take care of 30 residents. ARE you serious? Am I missing something here? Can someone please tell me that there is a rule of how many residents a CNA can handle on a shift. 1. The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) of 1987 is a federal law that regulates nursing facilities and nurse aide training in facilities. 2. The intent of OBRA is to improve the quality of life for residents in nursing facilities.
  19. downsouthlaff question for you: Did I understand you correctly ? Are you saying that your responsible for 30 residents ? (One CNA) for 30 residents ?
  20. This question is for RN's I have been a secretary for 10 years and was laid off approx 3 years ago due to the slow economy , and now I have decided to get into a totally different line of work. I researched the medical field, CNA to be exact and I have also spent time volunteering in a LTC facility as well before I came to the decision to become a certified nurse assistance. Although, I realize the pay isn't that great from what I'm use to making, however, I believe I will enjoy not sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day. I sure have learned a lot coming here to allnurses.com and reading the post, things I wouldn't have thought of had I not read it here. I sure hope I'm making the right decision to become a CNA. I start class in two weeks and I'm scared and excited at the same time. I want the RN that I'm working under to say, she (talking about me) is a dang GOOD CNA and I'm happy to have her on board.,, My question is, I want to know what you (the RN) wants out of a CNA. What do you dislike in CNA's or wish to be different about them. Otherwords, what can I do to make you extremely happy with my work as a CNA, and what are your dislikes in a CNA.
  21. Thank you 203bravo, I'll go tomorrow and purchase some more ear tips (larger ones) and see if that will make a difference.
  22. Thank you 203bravo, but I already tried that before I posted.
  23. That is correct bluedove1, I can't hear out of the left one unless I'm slightly holding it away from my ear, but as soon as I let go to let it rest inside my ear to put the other side on, the sound I hear in that one disappears.
  24. Hello everyone I'm about to start class in a couple of weeks for my CNA certification. I got my supplies, scrubs, notebook, books, watch, stethoscope, I'm ready to go, except for one problem and I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have bought 3 prestige medical professional aneroid sphygmomanometers (kit) and have had to take everyone of them back because I can't hear out of the left ear piece. I even changed out the ear tips to see if that would make a difference, it didn't. I can however hold the left ear tube out just a little (away from my ear) and can hear fine but as soon as I let go to put the right side one in my other ear, the sound goes away in my left one. I just can't figure it out and was wondering if anybody else ever had this problem before. I'm so frustrated, yet determined to find the answer.
