  1. I can do science. I'm awesome at math and chemistry. But English? English is my downfall. It took me 3 tries to pass Comp 1, and now I don't know how I'm going to make it through Comp 2. I've been staring at my homework for 2 days. I've rewritten it about a hundred times. We're supposed to identify the thesis statement and evidence for the argument, but I swear there are 3 different thesis statements!! I'm so confused, but I'm a stay-at-home mom and I'm not sure I can find childcare so I can go to campus for help. I just want to cry. I don't want this class to be the reason I can't be a nurse Does anyone have any advice?
  2. I should have graduated high school in 2003. I ended up dropping out and getting my GED. Now, I have a 4 month old daughter and I still managed to get a 4.0 gpa last quarter taking physiology and sociology. You can do anything you put your mind to. Don't let anyone tell you anything different!
  3. I think you're doing great! I know that it seems like it's taking forever, but sometimes that's just the way it has to be. I have a 4 month old daughter, so I understand how difficult it can be to try to go to school and raise a baby. My husband is here for me, but he also has a very demanding job and usually works 60+ hours a week. That means that I don't get much help with taking care of our daughter. Does your school have online classes? Those have been a life saver for me since I can't really afford to put my daughter in daycare. I'm usually able to get my work done when she is napping and once I've put her to bed. I've been taking 2 classes at a time because I want to do really well in each class and make sure I maintain a good GPA. If you can handle more classes, then do it! But don't beat yourself up if you have to take less than you think you "should". Just keep your end goal in mind when you're having a tough day. For me, I visualize my daughter at my pinning ceremony and it gets me through. It takes a strong woman to be a full-time mom and full-time student. I think that will just make us better nurses! Good luck!!
  4. I just started watching Nurse Jackie and I'm addicted. But the first thing I thought when I saw the pilot was, "She actually gets a 30 minute lunch break?!" Lol. Love it!
  5. Acetabulum. I love bones
  6. I found this in a breastfeeding book when I first had my daughter. I'd say it applies to kids of any age: The cleaning and scrubbing Can wait 'til tomorrow, For babies grow up, I've learned to my sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep. I'm nursing my baby, And babies don't keep. Don't let anyone make you feel bad. If you're spending time with your kids and being an awesome student, then I'd say it's ok to have a house that's not 100% spotless.
  7. I used to work as a legal assistant for a medical malpractice law firm. I actually got interested in nursing from talking to one of our expert witnesses. Of course, I'm also extra paranoid about getting sued because of it lol.
  8. I'm not a CNA yet (taking my class right now), but I lost about 30 lbs when I first became a server. I feel like they're pretty similarly physically demanding, in that you have to be on your feet all day, running around, meeting people's needs, and those trays aren't exactly light. Mostly it was the fact that I had long shifts with no chance to eat, and I was so tired by the time I got home that I went straight to bed without dinner. So, yeah I lost weight, but it was certainly not healthy.
  9. I'm really shy too. I'm also horrible at small talk! When I first started college I wanted to be a biology major but I was literally too scared of lab groups to take the classes that I knew I liked. When I decided I wanted to go to nursing school I knew it was something that I had to work on. I know that I am a fun person, and that once I get to know people I feel really comfortable talking to them. So I made sure that for every lab I sat with the same group of people. And I made myself talk. It didn't take me long to get comfortable with my group and by the end of the semester I considered some of them close friends. I know it will never be easy for me, but I've proven to myself that I can do it. And, you know what? It didn't kill me
  10. I actually really enjoy online classes. I have 2 step-sons (9 & 7) and a daughter (4 months). I would not be able to get my classes in otherwise. There's great flexibility, so if you need to you can "go to class" when the kids are in bed. Luckily I have a supportive husband who will take the kids out if I have to take an online test. Online classes aren't a cake walk, though. You still have to study hard. If you have proctored tests on campus you'll have to allow time for that. If they are at home, online, you probably won't be given enough time to look up the answers. I do think that this is a good option for those of us that are moms. I know that it's difficult for me to get to the one class per quarter that I usually have on campus. Good luck!
  11. Your fall semester sounds a lot like mine. I'm taking Anatomy, Microbiology, Human Growth and Development, Composition 2 and my CNA class. Yikes! But I am so determined to make it work. And then I get to apply for schools in January :yelclap:
  12. I'm taking German. That was my major originally so I might just get a double major because I love it so much. At the beginning levels I did a lot of flash cards. And my school has a weekly meeting called "stammtisch" where we meet at a pizza place and only speak German. It makes it more fun than practicing alone talking to myself lol.
  13. It's accelerated because once you have the prereqs it's only a 15 month program just like any other accelerated program. They just don't require a bachelors. Associates also counts. I realize now that in my original post I said it was 2 years.
  14. I know everyone has been saying that accelerated programs are only for bachelors, but it is possible to find them for an associates. Nebraska Methodist College offers one that I may apply to. But you do have to fulfill some pretty specific prereqs. It basically ends up being about the same as a BSN program where you do 2 years of prereqs first and then the last 2 years are all the nursing courses. That being said, it would probably be better to just get an AA or AS in liberal arts and only take those classes you really need for nursing school. That's what I'm doing. It's the program for transferring to 4 year colleges. I'll probably apply at NMC as well as a few other BSN programs. I think it would be best to talk to an advisor if you aren't sure.
  15. I do flash cards, too. But I do them kind of a weird way. The first time I read through the book I don't take notes, instead I just make a flash card for every key term or key point that I come across. But I don't fill out the back side with the answer. Instead, I wait until after we've had lecture over that chapter. Then I go back and try put the answer on the flash cards from what I remember from lecture and my reading. Of course, I double check everything before I actually put it on the card . I've found that this actually helps me retain the information better than when I take a long time writing detailed notes of each chapter. I also really like my anatomy coloring book. I'm a very visual person, so this helps me to remember, plus everything is already numbered so it's easy to keep quizzing myself. It's a lot of information, and I've found that it's easiest if I keep learning a little bit everyday and not trying to cram. I also try to go over all of my flashcards for the whole class about once a week. I'm hoping that this will help me when I get to the final! Hope that helps!!
