School Nurses: Non-Nursing Tasks????
I also have been asked several times to remove fingernail polish (it's against the dress code here), remove dog poo from a child's shoe , have had to remove a child's hand out from his belt buckle (teacher said it was "stuck", but it slid out just fine for me) and have had a child sent down to me (this week, in fact) for "excessive hiccups and burping". Just a few I can think of off the top of my head. P.S. Alcohol wipes work great to remove those pesky fake tattoos!

No, I'm Not a Beauty Shop!
I agree, it may take more time the to tell a child/teacher the first time your rationalization for not replacing the earring, but it will save you countless visits in the future from kids who are being sent down to your clinic to replace their earrings. I know I'm way too busy in my clinic to have a line of children backed up in my office waiting on their earrings to be put back in.

General Salary info for a School Nurse
I'm a school nurse in Texas. I have a BSN, but no school nurse certification (not required in my state). We get paid on the same scale as the teachers. I'm currently making $50,800/yr, with 7 years experience. Not too bad, in my opinion, for all the perks that come along with the job.

Special Needs Child Being Bullied: How can I keep my patient safe?
In addition to reporting this information to CPS, you also need to call and report this to the higher-ups on the school board. Let them know what you have witnessed and also let them know that you've reported this to the campus principal to no avail! I would also threaten to call the local news reporters if no action is set into motion to protect the other children within the classroom! Good Luck and thanks for being a child advocate!

Need Help from a Nurse Manager/Leader
I am currently an RN with an ADN and am working toward my BSN. An assignment for my last class is to interview a nursing leader (nurse manager, supervisor, director, Chief Nursing Officer, etc.). I was wondering if any of you who are or may have been nurse managers/leaders could help me out with a few questions. The questions are as follows: 1. What were your management functions? 2. What were your leadership values and skills? 3. What characteristics do you believe were necessary for you to be a good leader? 4. What was your management style? 5. What influenced your decisions? What were your problem solving stragedies/processes used? 6. What tools did you use to evaluate the success or lack thereof of the decisions you made? 7. What impact did the success of the organization have challenges you faced? 8. What were your perceptions of the greatest challenges/issues you faced in daiily operationis and strategies for solutions? 8. What was your approach to conflict resolution? 9. What motivational strategies did you use for staff? 10. What were your perceptions of future trends in leadership skills essential for future leaders? *Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
