I have the same problem with looking much younger than I am. And I work with a CNM that looks a lot younger than she is. But I would echo what others have said, if you are confident and knowledgeable your patients will respect you. Looking young may actually work as a benefit in some cases! Such as with younger patients!

I worked as a midwife's assistant for a home birth CNM while I was in nursing school and I loved the experience! I will say though make sure you are very comfortable with the midwife(s) you choose to work with. Make sure you feel safe working with them and they have a high standard of care. I sort of stumbled into the best case scenario. But I loved my experiences with natural, unmedicated home births and water births. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Doing doula work and IBCLC will also be super helpful.

hey there wanttoknow, if you're doing the online ABSN program at Marian you're campus is actually up on the north side right by the pyramids (86th st and michigan rd). Most or all of your clinicals will be at St. Vincent on 86th st, so you may want to take that into account when you look for housing. You will almost never be on campus at the main campus (on cold spring rd). for the online ABSN program you will definitely need a car to get to and from the purdue rd site and to clinicals. feel free to message me if you have more questions :)

has anyone had any success applying for and getting an interview with NYU from out of state? were you a new grad? did you have a NY license?

I would say if you have time to do it, you should! The job market has been kind of hard lately for new grads, so having CNA experience may help you out. Some other jobs you can look for that you can do once you're in nursing school (sometimes after a semester or two) are student nurse positions, student nurse extern (SNE) positions, patient care techs, etc. Each hospital calls the position something slightly different. If you can get a job on a floor or area that you might want to work in (ER or cardiac, etc) you'll be even better off in the long run.

Hey there. I agree with midwifetobe. I literally just googled midwives and started emailing to see if they had any volunteer or job opportunities. I've heard there are a ton of CNM's in the chicago area so hopefully you will be successful!

Hey there! I'm a current student at Marian in the ABSN program, I'll be graduating in December. Regarding the experience, I think its better than it used to be but I think to some extent all nursing programs are sometimes disorganized. I recently spoke with someone who graduated from IUPUI's and she said theirs was super disorganized too. As far as classes go, some instructors are wonderful, some are not great. They are all online classes so you have to put in the work if you want to see results. I would recommend getting a study group together if you learn well that way, asking for help when you need it and reaching out to the Prof. The main disorganization I see is with our clinical groups, they often change at least once. Yes its annoying, but I've heard that it happens at other schools too. As far as clinicals all of the clincial instructors I've interacted with are wonderful! They are nurses with lots of experience who really know their stuff. As far as NCLEX pass rates, I've heard its high (like over 90%) but I'm not sure the exact number. Also the accelerated program has a super high rate of students who get hired directly on at St. V, so the job security is pretty nice. PM me if you have other specific questions! :)

another question, what is the on campus/clinicals schedule like for the first semester? i'm trying to find out if it would be possible for me to go on any sort of vacation in september of my first semester. (by planning around clinicals.. i.e. taking a long weekend, etc)

i know that this isn't exactly what the op was talking about but i got my physical done for nursing school today and my doc put on the sheet under the "any recommendations for this student" box that she recommended i continue on celexa for anxiety. is it normal/required that she disclose that i have a "mental illness"? i'm not ashamed but i'm also like... HOW IS THIS ANY OF THEIR DAMN BUSINESS?

does anyone know if you're allowed to switch to the on campus accelerated from the online accelerated during the program if you have problems with the online format? I feel like i've read something about switching on the marian website..

I know you mentioned looking into being a volunteer and I think this is a great idea. Any volunteering you can do (especially at a children's hospital or on a pads floor) will be so helpful in letting you know if thats the area you want to be in. Any type of volunteering that has to do with kids and the medical environment can only help you. Once you've been volunteering at a hospital for a while also make sure to stress the time you've spent volunteering on ANY hospital job applications.

sorry i can't offer much help. but i can commiserate! i made a C in anatomy last fall and i had to take it over in the spring (have to have at least a c+ for my program). these pre-req classes SSUUCKK. hopefully someone can help you out with the getting into your program question..

So i'm not working as a midwife, but i was just researching this the other day. I found this website about working in the UK. I'm not sure about other countries.. but it looks like it is possible to be a midwife in the UK with CNM training. You might just have to go through a training program at a uni in the UK. Hope this helps. :)

I'm also planning on applying for the accelerated online BSN program at Marian for fall. (I'm going to the applications session this week). I'm just trying to decide between Marian and waiting to try to get into IUPUI's accelerated program. Decisions, decisions. Any feedback from people in the program or that have graduated, did you feel that your online classes prepared you for clinicals and the nclex? Is there anyway to go talk to the online teachers or get help at the nursing center/lab?

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had any information about the accelerated second degree BSN program at IUPUI. I'm currently deciding between IUPUI and Marian. Marian is way more expensive, but requires only C+'s to get in. Also marian basically has no waiting list. Does anyone have any experience with IUPUI's accelerated BSN program? What was your GPA, grades. Did you have to wait to get in? What was the program like, any of that?
