  1. Congrats on still being in the program! Have you lost anyone so far? We start MedSurg I & II after Christmas along with Maternal Newborn. Right now we are on Pharm/IV, A&P, and Fundamentals. Do you do all of your courses and then move into clinicals or do they mix in the clinicals as you go? Almost halfway there... can't wait!
  2. Our program bought us each an iPad 2 and purchased a few apps to use as well... This was one. I use it all the time for care plans and studying for tests (diseases and pharm). I'm not sure if there are different tiers but ours never expires- we can basically use it forever and have Davis's Drug Guide AND Taber's right on our phones/iPads!
  3. Not sure. We won't get them till the program starts August 16. I'll definitely post what they include. She also said they have a bunch of recommendations so I'll post everything as soon as I know. I figure we could all use as much help as possible :)
  4. Just got confirmation from our instructor the brand new iPad 2's are ours to keep and come loaded with apps purchased by the school. Yipeeeeeee!
  5. Thanks- you too!!! I got my CNA from MetroTech back in April. Had I known I would be getting into MATech I would have just held off and saved the $500. I didn't know they were doing iPads there too, that's great! I like how more and more schools are using newer technology. Our instructor emailed me and said it would be a good idea to get a wireless/Bluetooth keyboard for taking notes and doing assignments so I asked if the iPads were just loaners or if they were ours to keep. I'm not going to spend $100 on a nice case and keyboard if they're just loaners lol. If you were interested, they have some cheap keyboards on amazon for about $20. I'll let you know when I find out if we get to keep ours :)
  6. 1. Start August 16th, 2012 at Mid-America Technology in Wayne, OK. 2. Program is from August 2012 to June 2013 so 10 months. 3. I'm using LPN as a stepping stone. I'll work as an LPN until I complete an RN program, and will decide where to go from there. 4. The tuition is about $2500 total but that doesn't include uniforms or equipment. It basically only covers books, tuition, and... an iPad :) pretty happy about that last part lol.
  7. After the TEAS V, orientation, an finally an interview, I've been notified I'm accepted into the Mid-America Practical Nursing Program of 2012-2013! Like others on here I'm excited, nervous, and definitely intimidated but I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity. I'm not sure how many people applied to each of your programs but there were approx. 100 applicants at MATech and only 27ish chosen. It's going to be an intense 10 months but I definitely look forward to it. Anyone else out there going to MATech this fall?
  8. Was this in CA??? I lived in California for close to 3 years. After the economy took a dive the job market was flooded with people who had degrees and had been laid off. At the time my field of expertise was admin/clerical/customer service. I had just gotten laid off because I was pregnant (long story, basically they couldn't have 2 women pregnant in a 3 person office). I took to Craigslist, local help wanted ads, job boards/sites. Every single ad was exactly like this. They overloaded you with duties that would normally be the responsibility of 2-3 people, expected you to have a bachelors degree, be bilingual but also speak and write English fluently, and yet they only wanted to pay $9-10 per hour (if you were lucky). Considering the fact that daycare in our area was $300-400 WEEKLY I finally gave up. Employers think that a chosen applicant should be HAPPY to work for them under these conditions because so many people need a job. Well guess what? I don't have a 4 year degree. I've only taken one college course. I personally know people who have a bachelors and have even gone back for additional education and they can't hold a candle to my intelligence (not meaning that to sound like I have a big head lol!). I educate myself every chance I get by researching, reading, and absorbing everything around me. I hadn't had the money to go back to school to get a degree plus raise my daughter alone. It wasn't possible for me. That doesn't mean I don't know how to answer phones and file papers. Basically, I think a lot of employers need to be brought down a few pegs and informed their expectations are more than unrealistic.
  9. Hello All, The last 2 months have been a whirlwind. I woke up one day and realized what had been in the back of my mind for so many years- I want to be a nurse. I immediately enrolled in an 18 day CNA program, obtained my certification, and am applying to an LPN program- TOMORROW! I was wondering if any of you could give me any feedback on my entrance essay. They want a one page, hand written paper answering this: "Describe the characteristics you possess that you feel will contribute to your success in the Practical Nursing Program and in practice as an LPN". Here is my essay. I was afraid I was using "I" too much and would give them the indication I am not a team player. What do you think? Please be brutally honest!!! --------------------------------------------------------- I feel I possess several characteristics that will contribute to my success not only in the Practical Nursing Program but also in practice as an LPN and berond. Being a productive collaborator, having effective communication skills, and fostering a passion for learning are three qualities that will not only aide me in accomplishing my goals but will also allow me to excel in doing so. I firmly believe that being a team player and productive collaborator is the most important characteristic of any student or LPN. An idea I strive to reflect is "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts". My weakness may be someone else's strength. As a novice, I feel being able to collaborate with more seasoned professionals is invaluable. I welcome the advice, assistance, and guidance of my teammates and co-workers. Without such collaborative efforts we would not be able to reach our collective goal- the best possible care for our patient. Being able to communicate in a clear and concise manner is very important to me. Whether it is with co-workers, clients, patients, or acquaintances, if you do not convey exactly what you are trying to say it can cause problems. I try my best to speak and write in a manner in which my subject will best understand. I believe it is important to know not only who you are speaking to but also the best way to communicate with them without leaving room for misinterpretation or mistakes. This includes the use of jargon or terminology that the person might not understand. It would also include being as concise as possible while not leaving out any pertinent details. Any miscommunication could have serious consequences. I feel as a potential nursing student I have the effective communication skills I have discussed that would be needed throughout my studies and my career. I believe Anthony J. D'Angelo said it best when he said "Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow." I take every moment in life as a learning experience. Whether it is a mistake you made, something you read, or by act of repetition, we are all constantly learning and gaining knowledge. I push myself to excel in my studies and help those around me who might be struggling. I love learning about new subjects and researching the "why" of things. By nature, I am a very inquisitive person and am satisfied knowing that I will never stop acquiring knowledge and will continue to grow both personally and professionally. I have taken the first step in obtaining certification as a CNA. I am very eager to continue my health care career as an LPN and further my studies until I become an RN. I am even researching graduate programs that would allow me to continue my education after I achieve that goal. I have a passion for learning and look forward to the opportunity that Mid-America Technology Center has to offer.
