Is 31 too old to start a nursing career?
Oh, Honey! It is definitely not too late. I'm taking my 150-hour CNA class and am excited to start my prerequisites this fall. I turned 49 last week. I had to raise my kids (still have a 10-year-old at home) before I could do what I've wanted to do for quite a while. Apparently, I wasn't ready when I was in my early 20s. I am ready now. I know I can do this. Just had to clean the cobwebs out of my brain first! You will do great!!

I turned 49 yesterday and in a Nursing Assistant program at the school where I hope to continue on to nursing. The only "problem" I have is that I still have a son at home, who is 10. My mommy guilt is running rampant! But I am also sure that when there is a will, there is a way. I've been wiping out the cobwebs from my brain. The more I study, the more I look ahead to nursing! I've been a medical transcriptionist for over 23 years. It's been a career that I never really liked. (Transcriptionists are dropping like flies since the electronic medical records technology has been implemented in lots of hospitals.) Nice to see some other "more mature" students!

What if I can't do it???
I'm starting my CNA class a week before my 49th birthday. I figure it'll take me a while to get tuition reimbursement to even start my prerequisites. I'm thinking I'll be a nurse in my 50s. (Either that or a surgical techologist...still haven't decided). I've been a desk jockey since I was 14. So this is a BIG change and out of my comfort zone. But I'm excited! Good luck to all of us...the "nontraditional students!"

Mercy College of Health Sciences - Des Moines
I'm starting the Nursing Assistant course at MCHS. I hope the go on to the nursing program, once I've worked at a facility (hopefully a hospital) long enough to access tuition reimbursement. I'm an older student (49 next month), but I was very impressed by ****** during tour around the school. I was a little bit scared, but I'm more calm about what's to come.

Older CNA Student with Questions
Hi, everyone. I have enjoyed reading the posts...lots of good advice! I'm starting CNA training next week, hoping to go on to become an RN. But one thing at a time. Mentally and emotionally, I'm ready. I'm also a cancer survivor (cancer-free for 3 years). However, I need to get into better shape. I need to strengthen my back for the "back-breaking" work. I am making a list of shoes recommended in the posts. I've joined Weight Watchers and I'm losing weight, slowly but surely. I am also in some financial straits, as the cancer kind of drained us financially. Because of this, I am going to school gratis for my CNA certificate. I don't want to mess up this opportunity. Any advice on how to strengthen my back and feet? I know I can do this. Mind over matter, right? Thanks for any advice you can give me!
