LTC in California for New Grads
i've been with my employer for over a month now. I want to quit soo bad but i need the money. I got 3 days of training. Honestly, i didn't learn much. I have about 60 residents. I can't handle the stress and physical effects of this job. I am currently applying at other places but still no response. I am also a new grad trying to find an appropriate job for a new grad.

How does working for Assisted Living Facility Differ from LTC/SNF for LVN/LPNs?
I am a new grad and currently working at an ALF. I've been working for over a month now and i have about 60+ residents to pass meds to. I do the same work as the previous posts have said. However, with the amount of residents i have, i don't like my job. While at work, I usually work in the locked dementia unit, in which i've been hit multiple times and meds have been thrown to my face. This is my first job as a LVN and to be honest, i'm not sure anymore if nursing is for me. Everytime, i'm about to go to work i feel like having a panic attack because i'm afraid that another resident will hit me again. I'm just hoping that nursing overall is not like this. take care.

Tired of LTC...
I am wondering if nursing is like this or does it depend on the work setting? What type of work do u think is appropriate for a new grad? Ltc has too much work and stress too soon. I want to quit sobad!!!

Any stress relieving ideas for nursing student?
I do agree with neatnurse30. nursing school is just the beginning, but once you're on the floor as one of the official nurse it is hell. I am a recent LVN grad and i recently got hired at ALF i have about 60 residents to give meds too. Being exposed to what ACTUAL NURSING have changed my perception. Every time i'm about to go to work i do feel like having a panic attack. I have serious anxiety since i've been working. I can't handle the negative effects this job has given me. I am considering another career and quitting my current job. Good luck with school!

I think as a nursing student, you can't dedicate all of your time to school. It is important to put away some time for yourself. Do things you enjoy. For me, to relieve some stress i would hangout with friends and family. I try to surround myself with people that are positive and happy. Another thing is, while in nursing school, i have a study group. Sometimes my study group and I would just hangout, grab a bite to eat and just talk about life. Lastly, get some sleep. Sleep is very important! Just hang on, the program will go by so fast. Good luck!

Recent LVN grad, 1st time working in an assisted living TIPS PLS
@conscientiousnurse I do feel that my license is at risk. So, there are other places that have less work load? I am hoping to find a nice place with like what you said a reasonable load. I just want to have a smooth transition from being a nursing student to becoming a nurse. I remember in nursing school i'm so used to having just 2-4 patients while in clinical. So from having 2-4 patients to 60 totally shocked me. Thank you!

Does the thought of going to your job make you sick?
@BriRN i agree with you about how the "older" nurses eat their young. Since i'm one of the new hires I am forced to worked at the dementia unit because the other nurses have "seniority" and since working there my experiences have been really TERRIBLE. Honestly, each day i go to work i feel like having a panic attack. It's like a have a phobia. I've never felt these feelings before, not this kind of fear. That's good that you've stayed there for a 6 months. I've only been working for a month and i can't even see myself lasting another day. Hope things get better for you.

@neatnurse30 i know it is sad. If nursing is like this, that way i'm experiencing it i want to change my career too I understand now when people say do what you love. Having a stressful job will seriously affect you both physically and mentally. Life is too short! I'm just hoping that once i do quit, i will find a place to work that will change my perception of nursing for the better.

I just need to vent to people who understand
@racs09_RN yup 2 days of orientation. I had my orientation with a computer and 3 days worth of training with a nurse. I agree with you. I want to work at a place that will provide weeks worth of training. At least 5-6wks or until they feel that you are comfortable to be on your own if such place exist!
