I will be taking maternity leave in a few short months and do not see myself going back to work full time. My unit does not offer part time and per diem at my hospital requires two years experience. Any ideas where I can find per diem or part time work with only one year under my belt? I'm in the nyc area, westchester. I would be open to jobs outside the hospital too. I love my job (peds critical care) but full time is too much as a mom with two little ones.

Wanted to post an update. I wound up getting hired on a different unit in the same hospital. The nurse manager I had interviewed with before said she wanted to hire me but didn't have any more positions, she recommended me to the other manager and that interview went well. Was called the next day with an offer!

I got the PICU job!!!! I am so excited!

Does vnsny still hire new grads? I have been looking at their website periodically and didn't see any opportunities for new grads. from my interview at westchester medical center new grads start at 65000, 6k differential for nights

I have been on quite a few interviews since graduating (2 hospital and 3 school nurse) and I have to say that interviews are not a strength of mine. I did very well in school and I am able to handle working under pressure, but interviews somehow get the best of me! I have two interviews next week in the PICU and an adult neurology floor. Any advice for getting over the nerves? Also, does it really look THAT bad to hiring managers to be nervous?? Any other tips for preparing? Thanks!!

The pharm teacher will scare you and you will think the first test is going to have so much info on it, but it really wasn't so bad. Message me when you are studying for it and I will give you some pointers how best to prepare.

I found the program searching online and through allnurses. The program prepared me well for nclex. We all took Kaplan in January, and those practice questions really helped. You will get what you put into it. Study a lot all the way through and you will do fine. invest in an nclex book now, and i used med-surg success and pharm-success question books. It will take the whole program to get comfortable with the style of questioning. Though they do ease you into it. They mean what they say about owning you with scheduling, they will schedule clinicals where they can get a day... This means Saturday if they have to. Most people never had to do a Saturday. I was one of five that had to. Although in the very beginning, first 6 weeks there was an occasional Saturday lab.

I am a recent graduate of concordia's nursing program. It was about 10k a semester for just over 40k for the program. It was an amazing program on a beautiful campus in bronxville. The instructors truly care about the students and the clinical placements are great. I actually had an unplanned, but wonderful, pregnancy during the program. They went above and beyond for me and I graduated on time... I gave birth in October and most students did their preceptorship in November. The dean allowed me to graduate and complete my preceptorship in January. Every program has its faults, so I'm sure there are certain things people will complain about, but if you want a school where you are not just a number choose concordia.

Yes, I am looking elsewhere and I have a few leads. I definitely learned my lesson! I will not be doing that again lol. At least it is not a total waste because I am able to stay home a little longer with my beautiful 7 month old baby :)

So I emailed the nurse managers again. One responded and said "I am still interested in hiring you. The process is long and I have to wait for lines to be approved and opened as well as interview internal condidates first. Please hang on a little while longer (if you are able) and I will get back to you as soon as I can". Does this most likely mean that they plan on making me an offer when a position opens up? I really hope so! This would be the same unit that my friend just got hired on and I really liked the nurse manager in my interview. Feeling hopeful again.

Honestly, I don't think you could refuse an offer as a new grad. It is a gamble, like you said, you could wind up with nothing and be back at square one.

1. Westchester Medical Center: HR Interview-- Tell me about yourself. What are your strengths? How would somebody you worked with describe you? How would a clinical instructor describe you? How would you describe yourself? What was your favorite clinical and why? Where do you see yourself in five years? What shifts do you prefer? Nurse Manager interview at WMC was very easy, in peds, they just asked why peds? and, tell me about a clinical situation that made an impact on you (I panicked on this one and gave a crappy answer). They expected a lot of questions. Did not hear back from them so I do not think I got the job 2. Northern Westchester Hospital: HR- Why did you go into nursing? Then she asked me how I would rate myself in certain skills but I can't quite remember- wasn't anything too specific. Was like "how well do you work with others?". Have a panel interview coming up so will respond back after that... so nervous!!

I have a panel interview coming up for a new grad residency at Northern Westchester Hospital. I have been preparing for behavioral/situational questions. I am feeling quite nervous! The last interviews I have been on were really easy and I do not think that this is going to be an easy interview! Any tips on what I might expect? I know that I would be a great candidate for the job, now how do I relax enough to sell myself in the interview?? Also, what do people typically say during the "Tell us about yourself" question? I usually talk about how I like working with people and my past experience working with developmentally disabled students and why I went into nursing.
