  1. I've just recently transferred to the ED. The experienced nurses said they didn't truly feel comfortable for almost a year. Find one experienced nurse each shift and use them as a resource. You're still going through growth pains. Stay the course.
  2. I would call nurse recruitment.
  3. Try Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore County. They've been hiring new grads. You might have to have a BSN though.
  4. My husband graduated from there and loved it. He wasn't in the Nursing Program but he said all of the instructors are good. I'd consider it if I were you.
  5. Sorry it took so long to reply. New Grads are starting at $25/hr so I'd guess it's a little more than that. Good Luck!
  6. I work at UCMC in Bel Air. I really like it there. Harford Memorial is an older hospital but I hear the staff is very friendly. Either one would make a good choice. Not interested in Christiana?
  7. Has anyone worked in the ER at Franklin Square? If so, what did you think? I'm thinking about applying there.
  8. I graduate in two weeks from Harford. I absolutely love it. The professors are great. They really care about you and want you to succeed. I have had the greatest experience there. I would definately recommend Harford. I know that Essex has a great program but I heard the professors are hard to deal with.
  9. The Abingdon/Bel Air area is pretty nice and somewhat diverse. Abingdon is more diverse than Bel Air. If you're looking at Abingdon make sure to ask what school district you would fall under. Some have to go to Edgewood Schools which I would stay away from. Bel Air schools seem to be a lot better. The best part about this area is that it's pretty close to Baltimore and there are lots of hospitals to choose from. I 've heard great things about Mercy Hospital and Franklin Square. Good luck with your search!
  10. The community college where I live offers the CNA classes. I think it's a series of classes that last about a summer long. You should check with the community colleges in your area. Also, hospitals might offer classes as well.
  11. I have a friend who is working there while she is in nursing school. She loves it. She gets paid pretty well too and she's not even a RN yet. I think she makes around 18-20/hr.
  12. I've heard both good and bad things about GBMC. I guess it all depends on which department you work. I heard the E.R isn't great but a friend is doing an internship in the NICU and loves it.
  13. I live in Maryland and I'm working in as a Nurse Extern. The LPN's at our hospital have the same job description as a tech. They don't give any kind of meds and are responsible for am care, answering call bells, and duties like that. As a extern, I shadow a RN. I'm basically performing all of the duties of a RN. It has been a great experience. I graduate this May and know that I'm going to have much more confidence because of this externship!!!
  14. I'm a nursing student right now and am working as a nursing student tech at a hospital on the night shift. It is very hard. I've only been doing it for three weeks but I never know when I'm coming or going. I know it's great if you have kids but my main question is when do you guys see your spouse? I would hate to come home as he's leaving. That's so sad. At the same time, it would be nice to have either one of us, at all times with our future kids. How do you guys do it?
  15. A friend of mine got her CNA certificate at 18 here in Maryland. She got it from a Technical School but our community college offers the CNA classes too. It's possible the community colleges in your area do too. Good Luck!
  16. I'm still in Nursing School but from what I've heard some nurses help when the tech needs assistance or when they have a second to help. It's part of the tech's job description but there also has to be teamwork too.
  17. Where do you work in Baltimore City? I'm graduating in May of 2007!:balloons:
  18. I'm a second semester nursing student and we just covered diabetes. It is very important that your dad do fingersticks at home. That way he will know what his baseline is and when he's getting into trouble. I think he should check it at least twice a day. I don't think you need a Rx for the glucometer and strips. I do know that the strips are quite expensive but it's something that he needs. I think some insurances cover them but you would have to check. I'm not a nurse yet, but I thought I'd try and answer your questions anyway. :)
  19. Thank you so much for all of the good advice. I'm printing it out to keep with me!!!
  20. I will be starting Med-Surge 1 in the spring and am wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect. I heard that it is a faster pace than Fundamentals and that more is expected of me. What does that exactly mean?
  21. At the CC I attend we had two days of orientation. We didn't get our books that day but we ordered our uniforms and stethoscopes. Most of us have littmann's( classic and master classics). They should have told you about orientation with your acceptance letter. I'm sure they'll be sending you lots of info in the mail. You have to have immunizations, cpr for HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, as well as other things. We also were told about our calculations exam which had to be passed with a 100% score! As far as uniforms, we had specific lab jackets and shirts but we could choose our pants(although no scrubs or flare) and shoes. I got a pair of New Balance sneakers(all white). I used to work in a physical therapy office and the therapist always recommended those for people who are on their feet a lot. I'm still in my first semester and I LOVE it! I know that being a nurse is what I'm meant to do. Congratulations on being accepted! :)
  22. Wow. I'm in my first semester of nursing school and this story really scares me. It's hard to be a patient advocate when you're hands are tied. So, what will happen to the intern? Will she be allowed to get a way with that? Thanks for sharing your story.
  23. Well...have you found out rather or not you got in? Let us know!!!
  24. I'm currently attending Nursing School at Harford Community College. I'm in the RN program but they do offer a LPN program. You would take the first two semesters of nursing school and then the following summer take the courses for the LPN( The RN Students don't go to school in the summer). It's only one extra year for the RN program. Why not just go all the way? I've seen on this website that a lot of hopsitals are phasing out LPN's. Why restrict yourself to where you can work?
  25. I live in Maryland and we're qualified to work as a cna after our FIRST semester of school. I have never worked in a hospital setting before( I did work as a physical therapy tech for six years) but I'm not too worried about it. It will all come in time. I start clinicals tommorow! :)
